Review of Kubuntu 17.10, which is using KDE Plasma 5.10.5 desktop.
Sadly Kubuntu missed out on the Plasma 5.11 desktop, but it can be gained by adding the Backports repository

Considering using Kubuntu. Using Ubuntu MATE right now and loving how responsive and resourceful it is.

For getting a Unity theme, the settings manager has a feature that will let you download a Unity theme (it's called United). It's not 100%, but it is very close. When I set up KDE from scratch, I just use that theme, then add the extra few tweaks I like.

I'd like to get one of my computers off LTS, but for the moment I can't. But my desktop, yes, I'm really happy with Kubuntu 17.10.

On kde neon you can install drivers via the command line using "ubuntu-drivers --help"

have you thought about reviewing or trying opensuse tumbleweed ? since you like having an up to date system but hate doing it via ppa's?

imo, mpd with a frontend (like cantata) is the best option for a music player. Runs as daemon, advanced configuration, you can choose your frontend.

I feel like I could really enjoy KDE one of these days -- really do. Maybe I will give it another go once Manjaro gets a new version out. I keep wanting to like Arch-based distributions and KDE, but neither ever seem to work for me.

Is there an improvement with the power on/ power off speed? Previous kubuntu versions are a real pain in the ass in that aspect

I'd love to see how we can customise KDE Plasma for much improved management of running applications. Most of the Linux distros appear to be focused on Looks, Launchers, and Applications. What seems to be missing is how the DE's allow the user to see and juggle their running apps. Once we've launched our apps we need to have great visibility and ease of management. Many DEs have a Dock (copying MacOS, of course) but it isn't great for exposing running applications to the user (ugh, Surfacing?). The Dock paradigm is very static by comparison with the Windows 10 Taskbar. Task View on Windows 10 is implemented really well and application live previews with peaking adds such great dynamics.

If we are running multiple app windows, across multiple virtual desktops, across multiple displays, Linux seems to not be so good and is quite static. Certainly, it appears to be lagging behind Windows 10, which allows awesome visibility across all of our running apps and allow us to juggle things around with ease. I wish there was a strong focus on this aspect in KDE, Gnome, and other DEs. This is, for me, where the rubber meets the road. It's where the meat is. Task switching and running app window management is integral to workflow.

Maybe once Wayland is mature it will enable more sophisticated UX on Linux?

Love it!! The only bug I found was that if you turn vsync off in the compositor, the login screen uses vsync so I'm getting artifacts and tearing on the login screen. But once I log in it's fine, as long as I don't change much in the os. I ended up going with Ubuntu mate 17.10. have had no problems what so ever, so I'm sure kubuntu will get this fixed. Love kde, meh about mate lol.

I'm giving it a try. 1.6 GB 17.10. I think the last version was 1.3 GB, or maybe I'm getting old.

Installed Kubuntu 17.10 as a dual boot alongside KDE Neon.
Installed fast and runs the basic system using 490MB of ram which is impressive.

Spent a couple of hours tweaking the system so the look and feel is the same between both systems.
Started adding some extra software from the Discover archives and this again is where Kubuntu falls flat.

Install Kodi = 0
Install Clementine = 0
Install Wine = 0 and the list goes on. Suffice to say that this is precisely what happened with both the earlier versions of Kubuntu 16.04 & 16.10. Loads of software dependency errors.
Downloaded and installed Google Chrome but it decided not to install the application Icons. WTF?

By comparison my KDE Neon system install anything I want from Discover with no questions asked. Kubuntu might have the latest kernel version but it sure isn't worth the change at the moment, which is really disappointing as I wanted to upgrade the wife's machine from Kubuntu 16.04 to the latest version or she will go back to Win 10.

Yet again Kubuntu is let down by unreliability in an area that should see it be able to implement without issue.

KDE is plain looking. Sharp 90 degree angles. No graduated edges. Can this be made more pretty or gentle?

I just tried using Kubuntu 17.10
Question - Is the screen suppose to do that autistic flashing on purpose. It was so bad I couldn't see the control buttons to try and make adjustments.
