Allium aflatunense Deep Rose, a pink-lilac ornamental onion and a great plant for pollinators

Allium aflatunense Deep Rose is one of the most common varieties selected from the species Allium aflatunense, native to Central Asia (Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan). It is a bulbous plant, usually 60 to 90 cm tall. Like several ornamental Alliums (also ornamental onions or ornamental garlics), this variety is grown for the beautiful flowerheads: the spherical inflorescences are pink - lilac, around 10 cm across, very useful in a garden based on pastel shades, and the multitude of flowers attracts a variety of insect pollinators, especially bees and bumblebees. Allium aflatunense Deep Rose is one of the Alliums most commonly available on the market, it grows from bulbs that can be purchased in autumn, sold in many garden centres as well as online. The bulbs need to be planted about 10 - 15 cm deep, in well drained soil and ideally in full sun or at least partial shade. It is hardy in USDA zones 4 to 8 so can be grown throughout the UK as well as in many countries with cool to temperate climate. The leaves will start sprouting in late autumn - winter, and they will start withering about the same time that the flowers bloom, so it is very important to grow spring and summer growing plants around Alliums, in order to avoid leaving empty gaps in the garden where the Alliums have gone dormant for the summer, when the only living part of the plant is just the underground bulb. The flowers open sequentially and the purple inflorescences last usually a couple of weeks, but they remain ornamental for several weeks even after the flowers have faded, because the developing seed pods are arranged in the same spherical shape as the flowers were, so can be used to create spectacular dried flower bouquets.

I have Weird onions that don't have leaves, they only grow flower stalks. They don't flower, when the "flower bud" opens its just a bunch of leaves that grow new leaves at their end(rarely 3-4 little flowers pop up). I've seen this in sunflowers around Hiroshima. Search purple cornflower awkward botany, kind of like how double/full flowers work: the cells dont differentiate correctly in the flower bud so they do grow and mature to make something unusual.
