Answer for the homework question: Sound travels faster in solids compared to gases because of differences in the medium's density and the strength of molecular interactions. In solids, molecules are tightly packed together, which allows sound waves to propagate more efficiently. When a disturbance, such as a sound wave, is introduced into a solid, it can quickly transmit energy by causing neighbouring molecules to vibrate in a coordinated manner. This efficient transfer of energy leads to a faster propagation of sound.

In contrast, gases have molecules that are more spread out and have weaker interactions between them. When a sound wave travels through a gas, the molecules need to travel a greater distance before transferring energy to neighbouring molecules. Additionally, the weaker intermolecular forces in gases result in slower transmission of sound waves compared to solids.

Overall, the denser and more tightly packed arrangement of molecules in solids allows sound waves to propagate faster compared to gases.
