In this video I show you my first ever Pigs! Two weeks ago I purchased two Tamworth Pigs from Whitland Mart and decide to rear my own pork and sausages for the first time.

Now im extremely new into pig farming, I would not class myself as a pig farmer at all but im happy to have a crack at it and fingers crossed il have some really good quality meat at the end of the day for a good price.

Farming your own meat can be a very rewarding process and im looking forward to sharing this journey with you on this channel.

They are lovely looking pigs and I think, maybe aside from them possibly escaping the temporary setup, that pigs are about the easiest animal to keep. In my family we used to do a couple of pigs every year, and one would go in the freezer while the other went to family and friends. In my opinion the more natural feed you can get in them the better. We used to incorporate bruised apples in their diet, and even things like dandelions, and of course potato peels and similar. They always turned out magnificently and had so much better flavour than anything you can buy in the shops. Back in those days you could have home slaughter though but today you of course have to go to an abattoir and I am not even sure that there is any way of knowing that you get your own meat out the other end anymore.

My uncle is a tenant dairy farmer in the west country, his main income is from the cattle, but he's always got a breeding Sow and litters of weaners running around all over the place, he breeds them to sell for a bit of cash on the side

They will cost you more if on concentrate rather than buying pork, but you will get better meat and you are not paying for the water that is injected into many supermarket meats. We found Halloween provides an abundance of pumpkins that they love, and worth finding any local shops with end of life vegetables... Just remember nothing from the kitchen.

Don't let the buggers become pets, we used to buy orphan lambs and let the kids rear them until " they went back to the farmer".
My girls came back from their nans and discovered the carcases hanging ready to butcher the next day.
Neither have eaten lamb to this day and love to tell people i fed them their pets and it was 30 years ago!
