Hot and Dry Landscapes - Southern Gardening TV

Sometimes the home gardener can be frustrated looking for plants to place in a hot and dry landscape. Here at the MSU Veterans Memorial Rose Garden are some plants that like it hot. Stokesia 'Blue Danube' is a spreading plant that features beautiful lavender blue flowers. The flowers can be to four inches across and have fringed edges. The flower production is generous and can last for several weeks. Coreopsis is a floral workhorse in the hot and dry landscape. The bright yellow flowers are held high above the basal foliage on tall, thin stems that move easily with the slightest breeze. Another attractive yellow flowering selection is Jerusalem Sage. This can be a small shrub-like plant with fragrant foliage that is covered in fine hairs. The yellow flowers are displayed in whorls. Later, the round seed heads are unusual and attractive. Groundcovers are a great choice for these hot and dry conditions. Artemisia is also called wormwood. The growth habit is spreading and very vigorous. The silvery foliage is finely cut and creates a fine visual texture. Lamb's Ear, known botanically as Stachys, is a very descriptive name. The foliage is a cool muted sea foam color. The foliage has a fuzzy texture that has a very soft feel. In the spring flower spikes shoot straight upward with small purple flowers. As you can see the hot and dry landscape doesn't have to look like a desert. I'm horticulturist Gary Bachman for Southern Gardening.
