Flying V Part2 - How I cut fret slots by hand - Hobson Guitars

This is a custom Flying V style guitar I'm building and documenting with a video diary. This video shows how to use a homemade fret slotting jig to cut fret slots into a fretboard. No fancy equipment here! :)

Pretty gutsy way to do it, I must say. I have zero faith in having one of the slots being slightly off myself, so I printed my template from fretfind2d and glued it right to the board!

RESPECT ON YOUR USE OF HAND TOOLS. IF YOU TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION SETUP TIME IT REALLY ISN'T MUCH FASTER TO USE A SLOTTING JIG ON A TABLE SAW. THAT'S THE WAY I DO IT BECAUSE I'M LAZY BUT I USED TO DO IT WITH A FRET SAW AND BOX AND IT REALLY DIDN'T TAKE MUCH LONGER. I DO LIKE THE CONVENIENCE OF USING AN INDEXING PIN WITH SOME OF THE FRETBOARD TEMPLATES YOU CAN GET FROM STEWMAC. THAT DOES SPEED UP THE PROCESS BUT IF YOU ARE STICKING TO ONE SCALE DOING IT BY HAND ISN'T THAT BAD.

hi, i'm cutting some fret slots for a micro tonal scale ( 19 frets per octave ) and i'm seeing some crazy numbers like fret 1 : 0.9135" fret 2 : 1.7943" etc. do you cut to the 16th, 32nd, 64th of an inch? thanks, nick

that is such a hairy process, what I did was to mark the entire fret slot with an exacto knife, then double check, triple check the measurements before cutting :)
