Another fix is to open OBS Studio -> File -> Remux Recordings - converts .mkv to .mp4 which can then be imported

That didn't work. But this did:

To convert the MKV file to MP4:
Right click the MKV file
Click Open With
Choose Movies and TV or Films & TV
Click on the pencil icon on the bottom right of the window that opens
Choose Trim and slightly drag the slider to make a changes to the video
Click on Save As
Name the new file, saving as an MP4

This video is actually nostalgic. Brings back the memories from when I was a kid and thought changing the extension name actually converts the file.

that does not work at all, Adobe just says unable to read damaged or unsupported video when you try to import your AVI

I found another easier fix:

Open the video file with Films & TV
Click the "Edit in Photos" button, then click trim
Trim off like half a second at the end of the clip

The file should save as an MP4 and will now work :)

How garbage is premiere though for not supporting mkv?

Nope ! It does not work every times. MKV extension does only specify the type of media container. A mkv file may embed various types of streams and channels. If the video codec is not supported by Premier Pro, regardless of the container, it won't work anyways.

Solved it for me! Thank you for the ACTUAL easy fix (and not telling me to download ANOTHER piece of software!)

This video is a gentle reminder to YouTube that why dislike ratings should be visible to the viewers.

The most helpful part of this video was the comments who said to just remux the video in OBS. Renaming a file doesn’t change jack squat about it. This might work for .mkv files from some apps, but not OBS recordings.

I cannot believe it's that simple. This will save me like, 20 minutes a video minimum not having to run file conversions. Though it does raise the question of why Adobe doesn't support it in favor of other legacy formats. It's like shunning Blu-Ray in favor of Beta-Max.

not every mkv can be imported by rename the extension. depend on video compression.
