A very different video than usual. But I thought this is some interesting news and also a sponsoring opportunity for myself. And don't worry, my next project video is halfway done. And I have some more time again for videos.

The actual question should be why is "the big alliance maker" Bosch not able to make their blue and green batteries compatible. It is ridiculous.

The argument made by the Bosch representative could be made by all major manufacturers of battery-powered tools, which would mean that in the end, nothing changes. It is a step in the right direction that they open their system to smaller manufacturers, but only a small step. And with this being the second standard, it kinda screams "Format War"...
As to your "competition" argument: One battery system shared among all vendors could decouple the competition for better batteries from the competition for better tools: You could buy the biggest/lightest/cheapest batteries from vendor A and the tool from vendor B without being compelled to buy inferior batteries or tools by a superior tool or battery selection.

This reminds me of XKCD #927. Now there are 15 competing standards.

If it gets down to 2 or 3 standard batteries, someone will come up with an adapter that can be 3D Printed and probably open source.

There are adapters available already for most brands. Have a look on amazon or Chinese websites. Pretty much any battery can be used on any tool.

A few months ago I wrote to the UK Bureau of Standards suggesting that a UK standard battery connection system should be established. This would force manufacturers to make batteries that could be fitted to any brand of tool sold in the UK. In my opinion that would soon result in the UK system being observed all through the world because as the Uk is such a large market, no foreign manufacturer would not want their products to be sold in the UK so they would have to conform. This would not prevent innovation in battery performance it would just mean that new innovations would have to conform to the standard connection system. I am still waiting for a response from the UK standards Bureau!!! I suppose Covid 19 gives them some excuse for the delay.

He said "with ____ million batteries out there already we're not going to change.." So De Walt, Milwaukee, Makita, Hitachi, Metabo, etc.. can just say the same and there is NOTHING done, right?

I would recommend checking out some of the 18v adapters on the market. Like the badapter. Basically your Bosch 18v slides onto the adapter and the adapter then goes into the tool. Not the greatest but I've used it for Makita and Ryobi with great success. Currently using it on Makita 18v trimmer and the Ryobi 18v hot glue gun. Works everytime!!

I have been using my Bosch Li-Ion batteries for over a year with a Ryoby P318 23 Gauge Pin Nailer (no such device available from Bosch). A 3D-printed adapter and some cut metal strips was all that was needed.
What I would really like to see is a 230V-to-18V transformer that could hook up to a Bosch cordless device, thus temporarily making the tool corded, but without time limit to the usage.

Dude! You are going on a great direction! I hope Bosch loads you up with all their tools for reviews and usage. You would definitely make a great reviewer because you know how to use the tool, understand how they work and know how to make them better. If that happens, don’t let them take advantage. You have so much knowledge and skill that you deserve to be compensated. They will definitely get amazing feedback from you to improve their tools and have much better things in the market! Great job!

Ryobi is announcing something on the 30th of july so I'm assuming they will be involved somehow.

If they opted to partner with Metabo (and perhaps came out with an adapter that bridges between existing Bosch batteries to the new platform) other competitors would be forced to join and we would all benefit.

you could 3d print and adapter to go from one battery to another. It makes it lots of easier nowadays

In theory this is a great thing. Having one 18V (20V) standard for all batteries would be amazing.
Bit it's not really the battery pack itself that needs to be standardized, just the mounting system and power delivery that needs to be. There is still place for development elsewhere where different companies can push their designs in batteries, charging, cooling, etc.
I can in a way also in a way buy the way that Bosch thinks about not joining the Cordless Alliance by being a larger part of the market in comparison. But they still fuck it up since they are also opening up their other 18V system for other to join.
I mean, if they talk about having fewer standards in cordless batteries, why have two competing standards under their own brand?? Stupid really...

Wonder how much difference there actually are between battery system, you could in theory just make a dumb interface between different models if you really wanted to.

Also wish that someone would do the same thing for 12V (10.8V) as well. 18V systems are so big an heavy to use for smaller work.

Less waste is always a good thing, especially since some countries still use landfills instead of having recycling as the norm.
