Our world is a scary place to live in sometimes. We push ourselves to be our most productive selves, but what if life starts to take an immeasurable toll on our minds? Some of us will have experienced traumatic events at certain stages in our life; from childhood to adulthood. Traumatic experiences do not necessarily have to be consigned to the mind; an injury, whether it is catastrophic or not, can be debilitating and demoralising as time goes on. Equally, the social and political climate can have devastating consequences on the mind. Everyday life is a lot harder than it is made out to be. However, psychologist Daniel Siegel has developed a new technique, which he hopes will be able to help us cope and compartmentalise the stresses present in our lives. Siegel called this process “mindsight” and it has eight main functions.
