Scarecrows are not for scaring the birds, it's actually a stand where owls in the night and crow's in the morning stand and survey for bugs and insects. Some time the farmers use white plastics tied to a stick and stump them all around the fields to invite cranes and storks to feast on the field for insects. Symbiotic relationship.

The use of the doll (scarecrow) is different in various regions of the world. In South India and West Asian countries we used to put sticks with a firm grip and a white cloth on a belief that owls will find them on dark nights to come and stand, they will feed on the grains (1/3) and feast on the insects (2/3). In the modern world where pesticides became a norm, there was no need for birds to eat the insects. So the hungry birds started to eat the grains, since there were no insects. Hence the birds became the infestation for the farmers. So farmers 100+ years back started using the modern scarecrow dressed as men to scare them away. But regions like mine where we use natural fertilizers like cow dung and a mixture of 5 cows byproducts called panjakaviyam to minimise poisoning our crops, we are heavily dependent on our natural terminators the birds so we follow our ancient ancestral ways. Yet @jonathanpotter8760 who buys your veggies from supermall shelves and believes they are coming from factories kindly don't judge others, without researching.

My uncle had a scarecrow that was really effective because one random day of the week he would spend the entire day dressed as a scarecrow and shoot his 22 at every crow he could see.
Hilariously this led the crows to think that the scarecrow had to be killed on site so they would basically dive bombed the thing every day that he wasn’t killing them
