Gerald Ford’s SNL impression was actually just Chevy Chase being Chevy Chase. His clumsiness was inspired by the time Ford fell down the air force one stairs.

Ironic that Chevy portrayed Ford as being clumsy due to his fall down the stairs on Air Force One, especially since Ford was easily the greatest athlete to ever be U.S. president. He started at center and linebacker at Michigan for their national championship teams in 1932 and 33 and was team MVP in 1934. He turned down offers from the Packers and Lions to play in the NFL and instead applied to Yale Law School, taking on an assistant coaching position at the school to pay for his law degree. Michigan also retired his #48 jersey.

SNL actors focused more on the idea or act that the celebrity or Pol did, versus what they looked like. the voice was important, and Chevy didnt even try to sound like Ford, but his falling all over podium was spot on real.
