Is the Fujifilm X100 VI Overpriced?

Bit of a rambling video I guess. Let me know what you think :)

Yes, people often have a difficult time holding two ideas, simultaneously, in their heads: 1) this camera is adored on social media; and 2) this camera is a capable device. Both things can actually be true.

Its 200 bucks more than the previous model but they give you a better processor, 40 megapixels, 10bit recording, IBIS, 6k, new film simulation. In otherwords, its totally worth it.

I really appreciate your nuanced point of view! My reaction to many negative reviewers (on any camera) is that their arguments are often based on what they think the camera lacks - that it doesn’t have everything they want. One must evaluate these things for what they are, and the intention of its design. You can’t disparage an acoustic guitar because it doesn’t sound like a solid body electric. The X100VI is enticing for its features and price. But I’ve been using a Leica Q2 for a couple of years…so, this would be a secondary camera for me I think. But the X100VI is so stinking cool, and a great tool for its design intention. In the internet/influencer age, sales can quickly catch fire.

Very good video, as an owner of the X100VI I can only agree with you. The more I use it the more I like it and reminds me why I chose Fujifilm when the initial model got launched

Well said! Your closing argument is spot on. I love this camera and it compliments my x pro3 nicely. The x100vi is expensive, but if you compare cameras it doesnt look so terrible anymore, especially if you compare it to the xt5. You get a lens at least, miss some specs and win some specs. I sold a lot of lenses and only kept the 14mm f/2.8, 18mm f/2, 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/2, 80mm f/2.8 and the Viltrox 27mm f/1.2. I could replace the 18mm with the converter lens, but I want to keep the x100vi small.

One thing you didn't mention that is a huge reason I love the x100 series: the leaf shutter. I love being able to take nearly silent photos without worrying about electronic shutter issues (banding, readout speed, etc). Add flash sync to that and it's got a neat party trick. I have an X100V and if you tried to buy and xe4+23mm f2, it would have cost you the same price as the X100. I love mine and it's a shame people are dismissing this new one just because it's over hyped.

Dear Fuji… make a fixed lens rangefinder camera 📷 with a full frame sensor, to directly compete with the Q.

Also allow for more color adjustments (recipes) in camera.

You’ll crush it. 😉

The haters are all out for this camera. I’m not going to cancel my preorder because of it… it’s overhyped but still can be a great camera.

I try to get one. As a grab and go camera. Using canon for my YouTube stuff and my magazine and am happy with those but the Fuji is going to be the one to bring for fun, for taking bts footage and for just having fun. It’s light, portable and as you mentioned: ND Filter, good focal length (for me, love to shoot with 35mm on my R8) plus you have got the film simulations. What more do i want. Still thinking from time to time about about a Ricoh, but not sure about that. Happy weekend and thanks for your thoughts on this one.

Hey Tobis, What I don't understand is why every review is liking the camera but want to bring out some negative parts so they don't get labeled as the tik tok social media hype guys.
It's not interchangeable, it's not for movie makers obviously it's not for sport so let's review purely for it's design purpose. It's like if a car was being reviewed eg after a ford hatchback. Its a good car but its not a sports car...it's not a 7 seater, you can add a towbar but it won't pull a caravan etc.
Let's also compare it to something 3x price...
😂

Interesting discussion, I really appreciate your balanced view on the different arguments surrounding this camera. I think lots of Creators could learn from your transparent way of discussing all relevant aspects regarding camera gear, be it positive or negative. Really helps us viewers with judging what might be right for us. Keep it up!

P.S.: Just pre-ordered my X100VI, I really hope that I don’t have to wait too long

x100VI has no competition aside from previous versions. Jacket pocketable fixed lens 40mp camera, IBIS, built-in ND filter, leaf shutter, decent video capabilities, film sims, and aesthetics. The only cameras that can really compare are Leica Q2/Q3 (3x the price), Sony RX1R (too old and 2x price), Ricoh GR3 (too small, not tactile, worse IBIS, no WR), A7CR w/ pancake (2x+ the price), Fuji XE2 w/ pancake (close but no WR, not updated to new sensor/processor yet).

Please do a comparison between the Leica q2/q3 vs x100vi including photo quality etc. :)

I had the X100V and in some ways it felt like a well built camera, but in other ways not so well built.

I had the X-Pro3 at the same time and that camera felt clearly better built than the X100V.

I’d personally advise people to get an X-Pro3 if you can find one. A much better camera with the ability to add lenses.

I don’t buy the ‘creativity’ argument for a fixed lens, you can do that with a ILC, and in fact I do (my a6400 permanently has a single prime attached). The benefit of the fixed lens is really much more tangible than that. It’s optimised for the camera it’s attached to and it’s very compact as a result. That’s the magic. Try to find a APS-C ILC lens that offers the performance of the X100V/VI lens at anywhere near the size, it just doesn’t exist.

If you want something compact, with a big sensor, genuinely nice-to-use manual controls and great performance, basically Fuji is the only option. Drop any one of those requirements and there’s a bunch of options, but if you want all of those requirements it’s only Fuji (Leica gives the FF equivalent but at a vastly different price point).

p.s. I also think that’s why a lot of camera enthusiasts don’t get the X100 series. If you are an enthusiast and you enjoy a bag of lens options etc, then this camera really offers very little. But for a lot of people carrying around a bag of lenses is a complete no-go, so this camera may make a lot more sense to them.

In order to be hip it needs to be hard to get (waiting lists) and expensive. However this camera is also very very good!

I bought more than 50 cameras in my life. I didn’t have more fun and take it every like the fuji x100. And it is the cheapest camera I own ❤

I saw a video of a guy mention the X100VI feels a little less premium on the build side.. he said being built in China might have changed some kind of overall feel.. did you notice anything like that?

I preordered mine while it was still being announced live 😂. It’s still on back order through B&H :/

I do have vi. So what if it's over hyped and used by some as fashion accessories? Why would I care?
If you actually "care what others think", then you are ironically thinking like those who criticizes.
Why would a carpenter care what others thinks of his saw, or hammer? It's just a tool for the job.
