Here is a performance of the New Edition of The Heart Asks Pleasure First, written and revised by award-winning composer Michael Nyman for Jane Campion's The Piano (1993). It slightly differs from the version we hear in the movie, and includes a final section where the rhythm drastically changes, symbolizing a tragic scene in the movie.

I don't know why everyone doesn't like the tempo! I really enjoyed this version! I thought it was interesting almost mysterious, very intriguing! It was also his very own version of the song so of course, it's going to be different from the original, so calm yo bums. Loved it! Can't wait to hear what else you come up with!

I love to play this ! IT is actually really easy to play, and still it's complex and leaves so much room for interpretation. At 0:55 I always go berserk on the piano :D BOOM! and then go really slow and then crescendo and so on. Don't care if it's intended by the composer it's just so much fun

I purchased the notes of 'The Piano' a while ago and I really like this one most. Thank you very much for playing this version. It made me realise some mistakes that I made and hopefully help me improve on this piece.

This is the truest reading of the score from Hal Leonard Music Publishing I have found anywhere, where you can actually hear the contrasting left-hand rhythms and articulation details. Perfectly balanced between the hands and expressive to the letter, with a tragic più mosso climax before fading away molto allargando within a single sustained bar. Tempo-wise, Varyk plays at 62bpm (dotted crotchets) and Nyman at 50, but the score shows 56-64 (presumably undotted in error as it’s a compound meter), so Varyk’s tempo is as directed. Varyk certainly does justice to the score as written but slower renditions with a sentimental touch and little attention to detail are plentiful.
