This isn't a list of gifts - this is a Van Neistat dress up list. I LOVE IT. From the soldering iron to the $450 jacket - I'm envious of every single item.

I have that Swiss Army multi in black. It was a gift from my grandfather, a WW2 vet from the US Army Air Core. We were in the mountains of NC and VA for a road trip that he, my mother, my cousin, and I would take nearly every year to experience the vibrancy of autumn in Appalachia. I was maybe 11 years old, we had stopped in this little country store, and my imagination soared thinking about all the adventure this multi tool could unlock. It was around 2006-07, and the thing was probably $120 in the store. My mother agreed with me about the awesomeness of this key to exploration and survival, but it was too expensive. I didn’t complain or whine, but Pop must have noticed my excitement just thinking about the possibilities this pocket tool would provide leave my body as my face turned away from that glass display case. Later that year, the day after Christmas, my family and I were exchanging gifts when I opened THE present: that Swiss Army multi tool, in black, with a note that read, "to Caleb, from Pop-Pop".

Sharing all of the things I have used that multi tool for would be boring for anyone else to read through, but there is no way for me to put in words how much it meant to me in that one moment to receive it. Since that mountain trip, my parents divorced, I moved away from home, and my family has grown apart. Last year (2021), this sense of loosening bonds was compounded by the loss of my grandfather to brain cancer. I haven’t really been doing great since his death, but I have taken up a few hobbies that have given that multi tool some recent use. In addition to being a very practical accessory, that pocket tool will always remind me of that trip through the Appalachian mountains, the warmth of family, and the thoughtfulness of my grandfather who wanted a life of adventure for his grandson.

The drill and impact driver speaks to me. I also feel that the older I get the more practical are my preferred Christmas gifts

WOW Van....I am still reeling from your last video with Tom Sachs. It was so special to see mentor and protege together. The post was especially great and as an artist with several unfinished works, your chart has stuck in my head, and having Tom give you the nod really spoke to me.
Thank you Van so much for this channel. It's among the best on the platform and I think I speak for all 457, 000 of your loyal subscribers!

I’ve read “ shop class as soul craft”….fantastic. Love your gift list.

Thanks for the Shop Class as Soulcraft suggestion months ago. I purchased it then, and it made me feel great about having worked my whole career as a tradesman, rather then "lesser than".

I had never heard of the Filson brand until a few years ago when my father picked up some boxes from the curb. Inside thse boxes were a bunch of scuba gear and a tan Filson duffle bag. I was very surprised to see what they were worth so I put it on ebay. A short time later I was contacted by the props department for the show Hawaii 5-0. They wanted to buy the bag and have us overnight it from Florida to Hawaii. I think they paid darn near what they paid for the bag just to have it shipped. They told us which episode it would be on so we waited and took a picture of the screen when we saw it laying on the ground in one of the scenes. Pretty cool and probably the closest I'll ever come to being famous lol

I bought that Milwaukee kit a few years ago. Home Depot had a special deal going and it came with a free Milwaukee chordless ratchet. Love it!

Dear Van, I basically love your videos and feel such a connection to how you move through and work with the world around you! I let out a little shout of joy when i saw you open the gift that was Mathew Crawfords book! I count myself lucky to have a father you was a metalwork (Shop) class teacher and was basically raised in a workshop. I too have a copy of Matts book and it has spoken to me many times. I read it every few years to nourish and re-energise me in my side projects. It is the only book i bring with me on my holidays to read. I have underlined and written out so many quotes: my favourite being "you cant hammer a nail over the internet" and his reference to "tacit" knowledge. Please keep on being you and providing such grounded, relatable, content. David

Just used a chisel to widen the vents on my vacuum, which was suctioning itself to the high pile carpet, and I have to say I feel like a spirited woman. Haha!

Those suitcases are awesome but for $300-400 from travelPro (platinum elite models) you can get a lifetime warranty carry on with the smoothest wheels/bearings ive ever experienced. Best purchase ever. I asked for recommendations from pilots and flight attendants for a year before going with TravelPro.

While I have used the more expensive headlamps from Petzl and PrincetonTec, LED tech has gotten really cheap and my new go to headlamp is an $11 energizer headlamp from Walmart. I use the crap out of them and they haven't failed me yet and the three brightness settings for $11 is a pretty nice battery saving feature.

I still implement the 3 things the spirited man taught me about gifts. Thoughtfulness, about the size of your hand, and cheaper than 25$. I think I got that right? Either way, it’s a great guide.

Nice one Van. I Still remember about your video talking about making a gift. Also advising to purchase small gifts in advance. Cheers and stay safe.
