I'm gonna give her the benefit of the doubt and say that she was running out of air, probably forgot to breathe earlier. Happens to me all the time, luckily it's in choir where I can stagger breathe

She took a breath to accentuate the "hide". Jessie J has has an amazing voice too, never a flat note and amazingly natural singer.

Totally showing how much of a Jessie J fan I have been for the last 13 years 😂 but she has suffered with heart problems most of her life. She suffered a stroke at 17. During this time period she was having heart problems again during her trip to China for this. She almost had to pull out of the competition so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was why she needed to take a breath there. She also sang My Heart Will Go on and it was singing to herself. She has some of the best vocal chords and breath control out there 🙌 I always loved her version of this too so it could be deliberate 🤷🏻‍♀️ she’s one of the top 5 vocalists out there today in my personal opinion and is clearly doing something right!

I'm a singer, she didn't take a breath, she's making the song her own. You should know that. She did amazing.

My guess is that she was afraid to go flat on the "hide", cause that's a place in which you can easily go flat if you don't pay enough attention. Breaking the phrase and making that "Hide" the first note after a quick breath actually makes it easier to sing it on pitch. She's a pro but this is still a huge song to sing, maybe she was nervous and didn't want to risk being flat on that note (which would be veeeery noticeable)

I'm so glad two other comments pointed out the obvious about that breath being there. I think this goes back to vocal couches being genius at the technicality of singing. I think that's why they may enhance the natural talent of artist but the artist gives so much better natural emotion than the vocal coach did in this example. That nowhere to hide was so non soulful and like didn't make me feel what Jessie does or Whitney...or many other singers...i think Jessie did the breath because she naturally knows how to convey what feels in this song which i think vocal coaches lose in their technicality. You sung it nice and technical and it's not terrible but it isn't good.

It’s not a pause for breath! It’s a stylistic choice to add a bit of excitement to the moment. Any great vocalist should know that. Geez! 🤦‍♀️

Jessie is one of the most accomplished, incredible singers alive today. You wouldn't ever be coaching her, she is a master of her craft.
