Totally agree with staying emotionally detached from your portfolio. All the “magic formulas” I try to stay away from. Been investing for almost 18 years in the market and the best strategy for me, index, and bonds. Total market index, total market bond and also a percentage in international index. I live the “set and forget” method and it has served me well for the most part. Doesn’t matter what the markets doing really because I still have 20 plus more years. I just rebalance every year or so. The best financial book I’ve ever read is millionaire teacher. This has worked for me. Great video though.

I found your channel recently. I just saw the Magic Formula videos today. I wish this was something I'd know about 10 years ago. I'm 59yo and considering early retirement. Rose, have you considered applying trade rules with triggers such as Stop Loss rules? I use them in my TD Ameritrade account. For instance to sell a stock if it drops below, say, 8% of it's maximum height -- so you may passively sell your stock if it ever regresses but you also don't sell too soon before it has reached its peak.

You could take it one step further with rules like: to sell at a max height or loss of a % or $ amount but never lower than (insert loss of dollar or percentage of your purchase price) so you are guaranteed to at least break even or at a specified $/% gain. You can also set a rule to sell but never below what you paid after a certain length of time.

Rules like this could be handy to sell your stock automatically after one year without your intervention and you can choose to add conditions like if they made you a profit but not below a stated $/% profit/loss.

Hi Rose. Just wanted to say that your video was very informative. I do have some questions. It’s my understanding (according to the book) that when you approach the 1 year holding period that you are supposed to sell your losers and replace before the 1 year period for tax purposes. It looks like you held them for longer than 1 year. In the book, Joel explains that for your winners you want to hold past a year and run the screener again. If the same winning stocks appear again you can choose to hold them, or sell them and replace them with something higher on the list. Due to the volatility there is the chance of multiple losing years. Remember, Joel lost almost 40% in 2008. Keep up with it and keep us updated!!
