VFX Breakdown - Alita Battle Angel

Weta Digital took on the role as leading vfx house for this cyberpunk action film, creating the leading character Alita. Actress Rosa Salazar played the role in a mo-cap suit and animators later used that data to rig her CG character Alita.

Rosa trained for about 6 months in everything from martial arts to rollerblading, but even so, still had around 9 stunt doubles filling in for the even harder stuff.
Rather than just one camera recording the actress' facial expressions, Weta used two infrared cameras, and dots on her face, for their deep learning tools integrated in the facial pipeline.

The environments of Iron City were a huge task to manage by just one single vfx house. This is why many shots were shared throughout the production, with all the vfx houses working to a common goal.

The Manga character of Alita typically had large eyes and a small mouth, which the Weta team reflected in their CG humanoid character.
DNEG's main body of work were cyborgs, including the "factory gang" and the cyborg, Amok.

DNEG were also responsible for the crazy bar fight scene, involving the 'Factory Gang' and all in all contributed 260 shots to the final movie, including helping out with some of the environments in some of the pick-up rollerball game scenes.
