Here I present "Serenata" by the American composer Leroy Anderson.

Whenever I listen to this piece, I always think of New York, hence the accompanying photographs of the great city....
Composed in 1947 it is played here by the Richard Hayman Orchestra under the direction of Richard Hayman.

Oh, the thrill of being onstage for a high school band concert. Black skirt, white blouse and nylons, waiting on the edge of my seat for the director to raise his baton. And suddenly - da dah, da dah da, da dah, da dah... The Belle of the Ball. Or Seranata, or Sleigh Ride. We played so many of Leroy Anderson's compositions during those years. And the complete and utter thrill of watching the trumpet section stand and play Bugler's Holiday. The tingles went right down my spine!

the most under-rated composer of the 20th century. He wrote so much more than novelty pieces.

I am a native of New York City, born in Brooklyn in 1943. At 19, I joined the US Navy and settled in California after 21 years in the Ol' Canoe Club. I spent much of my free time in the the 1950s and early 1960s exploring the city. I see so many familiar sights in this short video.

I adore the music of Leroy Anderson and I thank you for bringing us so much of it in a format that we can relish. Your videos are masterful.

I consider this Serenata the most profound and romantic among all works by Anderson. It definitely should be performed more frequently. Many thanks for the accompanying nostalgic photos of Manhattan in her golden glorious bygone days which match the music perfectly.

Boy I wished I was around in this era NYC. I was just a small kid then. This music captures it perfectly.

What a treasure we had in Leroy Anderson. He gives back to us today America as it was and what so many of us remember growing up. The pictures that accompany the music are priceless. Thank you.

Как же хороши черно-белые фото! Вот уж воистину - музыка в камне! Музыка Андерсона подчёкивает эту характеристику архитектуры. Великолепно! Спасибо, Найджел!🙋‍♀️

Every time I saw a beautiful girl, when I was much younger, this theme would go off inside my head. Of course, it didn't mean I got a new girlfriend, but at least hearing this romantic serenata made me feel better throughout the rest of the day.

It sure took a great ingenuity for Anderson to conceive this beautiful and stately music with subtle contrast of sounds. The accompanying scenes of Manhattan in her by-gone glory evokes a deep sense of nostalgia.
