Cranky Kong doesn't think Donkey Kong has proven himself to be a hero yet. So, he decides to work out a deal with the closest villain that he knows. K. Rool and his baddies have hidden bananas in new places across Donkey Kong Island in another attempt to outwit the best-friend duo. And the only response is for Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong to go off on another adventure!

To the uninitiated: This is NOT just a GB port of Donkey Kong Country! Some of the stage backdrops are based on DKC's (with entirely different level design), and then most of the environments are brand-new. Similarly, some of DKC's soundtrack was remixed, but the game also contains a ton of new tracks, which work very well on the Game Boy. Overall, not as good as any of the Countries, but a worthy and fascinating game in its own right.

Calling it now. They are going to build up to DK64 by releasing these each month and then release DK64. Hope so, at least. My favorite DK game and favorite Rare one

Legend has it that Rare specifically made this game as a giant "Screw you!" to critics of DKC who said that people only loved it because of the fancy pre-rendered graphics. DKL isn't perfect, but it's still a fun game and proof that the OG Game Boy could deliver the same fun platformer experience in portable form! (And the visuals 'are' impressive for an OG Game Boy, if understandably compromised from its SNES counterpart)
