This is Geoffrey Hinton, the man widely considered as the "godfather" of artificial intelligence, at the start of May 2023 he left google and shared concerns of potential dangers of AI technology.

In this video we'll look at what Geoffrey did at google and what his concerns are. Please do subscribe if you haven't already, it really helps this small channel grow.

Geoffrey Hinton is a 75-year-old AI researcher who is known for his pioneering work on deep learning and neural networks. He has had a decades-long career in AI and has been instrumental in laying the foundation for much of the AI technology that we see today. Hinton has won numerous awards for his contributions to the field of AI, including the Turing Award, which he won in 2019 along with two other AI pioneers, Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun.

Hinton retired from his role as the head of the Google Research team in Toronto after 10 years in order to speak openly about AI safety issues without having to worry about how it interacts with Google's business.
So what concerns did he raise?

Hinton was quoted as saying ai chatbots are quite scary and that right now they're not smarter than us but I think they may be soon.

An ai chatbot smarter than humans is certainly a scary thought and could mean its completely uncontrollable by humans. What impact an AI that's smarter than humans can have remains to be seen but could lead to huge job losses at the least.

In a previous interview with MIT Technology review Hinton shared concerns of bad actors that might try to use super intelligent AI to manipulate elections and stir up violence either in vote rigging or social media campaigns. Perhaps an automated version of the election rigging experienced in some parts of the world.

Hinton also raised concerns of bias in AI systems. They are trained on text-based large language models which essentially are huge troves of human writing and can amplify discrimination that exists in society already surrounding topics such as race and political bias.

Hinton has maintained that Google has "acted very responsibly" regarding AI. But simply felt he couldn't raise these concerns genuinely whilst still being paid by google.

Do you share any of these concerns with Hinton and there any potential negative impacts you think he didn't mention?

The point about job losses will start to become very real in the next 5 years imo
