Former grocery store employee here - The watermelon bins are made of a very sturdy cardboard and have special black trays made to re-use the bins for other bulk product. A store could get one or more shipments of watermelon every week during summer and breaking down those bins are so difficult that they are instead reused for displays or used to ship back plastic for recycling as much as possible. Now... Granted most stores will find a way to actually COVER the labeling on the outside of the bins when they hold other products... but at least you now know *why* that one watermelon bin had broccoli instead!
