The “send beer and bread” sign is gold! My great great grandma moved to the US from Germany between the world wars. She was so embarrassed of her country post WWII, that she didn’t let her kids, including my great grandmother, learn German. She did anyway, but at 90 something when talking about it, the only words she remembered were “bier and brote” (beer and bread) because “that’s all I needed”. She was a badass, and I miss her a lot
