I got to show my husband this live when we went on a cruise 5 years ago. We were on Royal Caribbean's Anthem and we left port Canaveral for the Bahamas so the waters were relatively calm. I had to explain to him what the port pilots job was and then he thought for sure that both the ship and the pilot boat would stop...Nope.
