Not very often does Johannes Brahms let his hair down and totally succumbs to a purely Romantic vein. The "Song of the Fates" [Parzen] is one such example, as are "Nänie, "The Night Watch, " and the "Schicksalslied" [song of Fate] . And when Brahms does embrace his Romanticism, he's irresistible! Of course, for me, ANY piece by Brahms is a treat and a true gem. Oddly, many people still fail to recognize that Brahms belongs in the first row of Classical composers together with Beethoven, Mozart, Schumann, Sibelius, and Ravel, to name a few.
