Bioprinting: An Organ Transplant Revolution?

Could the 3D printers of the future print... us?

That’s the exciting potential offered by bioprinting; a breakthrough which could herald a revolution in medical science and save tens of thousands of lives a year.

Back in the early 2000s, researchers realised that the key to meeting demand for donor organs may just lie with existing technology: an ordinary, off-the-shelf inkjet print (with a few moderations, of course). Since then, it’s become possible to print an organ constructed from a patient’s own organic material – essentially, one that’s genuinely theirs.

Sound like a medical dream-come-true? Find out in this explainer video from iluli by Mike Lamb – explaining the ideas and innovations changing our lives.

This, plus de-aging cells with partial yamanaka factors could be the key to extending life by decades– imagine getting an organ back, but one that is much healthier than it would have been, without the cellular damage that comes with age.

This is like hitting three birds with one stone. It's like treating the most prevalent diseases today such as almost all types of cancer affected organs by replacing it instead of undergoing through painful chemotherapy. Treating kidney disease, and heart problems.

Bio printing will open a big oportunity for the people in need for the organs and it is exciting to see them develop and become more wide spread

As suggested that it may take the whole of 2020 to have some feasible bio-printed organs, I woand nder if sudden growth in the AI field would shorten these expectations. Very interesting topic to think about. Great video as always!

Thank you for your hard work. The idea of "making a human part" is wild by itself. So many things spark my curiosity, from regulation and viability in third world countries.
