Bridging the Skills Gap: Insights and Strategies for the Evolving Philippine Labor Market

The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) held a public webinar on October 17, 2024, from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM via Zoom. The event featured two PIDS studies addressing the critical issue of skills mismatch in the Philippine labor market and the role of skills in shaping employment outcomes.

The first study, “Inputs to the Philippine Labor Market Information System and TESDA’s Skills Anticipation and Prioritization of Skills Requirements Framework,” tackled the need for a well-functioning Labor Market Information System (LMIS) to align education outputs with the economy's skills needs. It focused on improving data collection and institutional partnerships to better anticipate future skills demands.

The second study, “Labor Market Structures, Pay Gap, and Skills in the Philippines,” provided a detailed analysis of skills demand in various sectors, highlighting the pay gap and labor market inequalities. The study emphasized the importance of developing technical and analytical skills to fill hard-to-fill jobs and improve wage equality.
