Good info here, thank you, it is much appreciated.
Took me a few years but thankfully I've been bidding similarly for about 18 months now. It's refreshing to hear these tips from a more established and profitable company. We get a good amount of work and the numbers are there so we're profitable but I can't just walk into my competitors office and ask them these types of questions. Knowledge like this is a huge help.
We get quite a bit of referral work and a fair amount from advertising, both residential and commercial, but mainly smaller maintenance type jobs.
Any tips to meet builders? Are builders always the foot in the door to new construction type jobs?

So for me it's all tools, supplies and labor plus 30% of the total for overhead and profit. What's crucial for me is that I clearly understand what the customer wants so I can calculate my total cubic footage of excavation and rock or other supplies. The volume of materials will always dictate the price of the project.

Bid it low enough to get it. Then change order the heck out of everything lol
My brother is a dirt contractor, that’s how his competitors operate.
30% holy heck ! Do you use an estimating program ?

How do you come up with your overhead on each job ? What is included in that ? Machinery payment, transport, fuel etc ?
And how you divide for how much you charge for your monthly payment for machinery with each job ?

Are you including the equipment cost on overhead or do you carry a line item for equipment in addition to labor, material, overhead and profit?

Around our area the hardest figure to come up with is how to win a bid on work because so many companies will bid work very low. The challenge is to bid it low enough to get the job then be able to complete the job profitable.

I’m confused when you say you add in profit and then 30% on top of that ? Is the 30% considered profit or just a padding for unexpected labor/materials or overhead ?

Man, I sold my house in Florida been in the smoky mountain area for the past week staying at a Airbnb, I plan on buying land having it cleared graded and excavated, along with the septic and well drilled and a fifth wheel placed on the land with a carport all within two months! They are so busy in this area that the companies act like big shots!it’s annoying. I may have to watch YouTube videos and rent an excavator myself. I just need a driveway cut in the steep slope. The drainage put in and the lot cleared and compacted where the RV is going to go. Dont plan on spending more than 10k. If I can find a company who can do it they are all busy. I guess human beings finally caught on and realized it’s better to live in nature than these busy, compact, overcrowded cities.
