Bill Haley doesn’t get near the credit he deserved for formulating the rock sound. He, unlike all the other big names in rock, played all over the country long before he had success, and absorbed R&B into his C&W sound, improving the mixture over time until he had a #1 hit with "Rock Around the Clock."

Ike Turner (yes one part of the later Ike and Tina Turner!) already sang it on his single in 1950.

A cover of Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats who released this in 1951 if I remember. Haley added much more guitar to the sound and in many of his songs. You can hear in Brenston's version right towards the end the guitar comes in that also foreshadows rock guitar later.
This song is about the Oldsmobile Rocket 88 that was first introduced in 1949 and is considered the first muscle car.

Bill Haley was the first white rock and roll singer. This is a fact. Then there was Elvis Presley.

1st rock 'n' roll, but if is by Bill Haley with Haley's Comets - not by Jackie Brenston & his Delta Cats (rhythm & blues).

This song is rock, just as Wynonie Harris' song Good Rocking Tonight was rock in December 1947....prior to that, rock was fragmented, and really one can listen and say....that sounds like rock....but...maybe it's country, boogie woogie, etc....

Soon to followed by the likes of Pat Boone, stealing great tunes from their originators…
