SpongeBob's Modern Episodes Were REMADE in the Original Style By A Fan

SpongeBob SquarePants has changed since its first episode, Help Wanted. Over the years, SpongeBob and the rest of Bikini Bottom have gotten a brand new style to fit the modern era. On Twitter, a fan recreated what it would look like if modern stories looked like Season 1!

Because SpongeBob SquarePants episodes have been airing since 1999, it makes sense that the show doesn't look the same today. Season 1 actually had a different way of animating the characters by using cels, making Bikini Bottom feel like a warm, welcoming place. Does the modern style of SpongeBob ruin everything built upon in the classic era, or is there something more going on here?

The original style has more charm to me. May not be as expressive with the animations, but it looked more stylish. Maybe I'm just too nostalgic for the older style

Fun fact: Season One of SpongeBob was the only season to use cel animation, a method where each individual frame was painted onto a sheet of cellophane.

Seasons 1-3 and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie are the golden ages of SpongeBob and I’m glad I grew up with that

Season 1's color palette is where a lot of the warmness comes from
While the newer seasons are bright and vibrant season 1 always resticted itself with what colors to use, that along with the different texture of surfaces give it a nice feel.

Well, I love both styles of drawing and animation, in fact my goal wasn't to have a debate about which style is better. My curious vision only made me wonder, what would these characters look like if they still had an older style. And since they are only images it doesn't cost me that much, but an animation is something more complex and that should be appreciated no matter the year, style or the way the animators work. In any case, Thanks for the feedback :)

To be honest. Both is great.
Style 1 is old school and nostalgic.
New style is rather... interesting and curious.
They can do a lot of stuff that wasn't possible back then and you know, I can see that. Either way, I can't see which i wouldn't enjoy out of the two.

The one thing that I love about the artist’s style is that he made the modern episodes look almost exactly like how the show looked back in season 1. It gives it more of a sense of nostalgia and it shows an evolution of how much the entire show has changed in over 20 years. I prefer the season 1 look more because of how sophisticated the characters movements are. It may not have the same animation that seasons that followed it would be known for using, but the season 1 style still has the charm that made the characters so beloved and iconic.
