I'm working on this concept, too, and my best tip is "buy it when you get there." Maybe you will eventually come home with more stuff than you brought (and a heavier suitcase) but for most of your trip it will be lighter. For example, if you MIGHT need a jacket or sweater for a chilly day but you're not sure, then buy it at your destination. Some of my favorite sweaters are ones I bought in France for exactly this reason. Ditto shoes, if you MIGHT need fancy shoes for a special occasion, then buy them while you're there. Part of the fun of any vacation is shopping, after all. And only take enough toiletries to get you through the first couple of days and buy the rest as needed or use the ones provided by the hotel. Also, I carry a compact, collapsible duffle bag to bring home clothes and/or souvenirs that might not fit in my carry on. You can check one of the bags coming home if you have to.

Chronic overpacked here!!! Your video has been sooo helpful. We are going on a cruise for 8 days and I determined to not over pack bc it’s just miserable. I intend on using this tips!!!

Totally agree about halving your clothing, I would add though that in general you only need 2 weeks worth of clothing max no matter how long you are traveling. I did study abroad for 2mos and 2 weeks of clothes was perfect, I occasionally chafed at the lack of variety but since I was traveling it was fine. If you are going for 6mos or something you might want more lol.

I could watch you talk all day. I am already a light packer, but I think I could be more ruthless in what I chose to bring on my trips.

Rather than tool, weigh yourself, then weigh yourself again holding your bag, subtract weight 1from weight 2 = bag weight. A little math but saves buying another very specific tool.

Such a good tip to weigh your suitcase. When I travel to London on the train I know that I cannot take more than 8 kg because I cannot lift IT above my head if I have to put the suitcase in the overhead shelf. To gauge toiletries for a trip, a couple of weeks before you go fill your containers and make a note of the day you started using them this way you will know how many days worth you have in each container. Just make sure your daughter isn't using them without your knowledge, otherwise your calculations will be up the spout. 🤣 your travel tips are invaluable thank you so much x

Makes so much sense. Especially the minimal makeup and toiletries. Yes, we need to carry ‘light’. 👏

terrible traveler here - mostly b/c it's so hard for me to pack well the older i get. thanks for this advice. will heed the take HALF for certain. every single trip, i realize after i arrive at my destination, that i am only wearing the same 2 - 3 bottoms (sweats, jean capris, and full length jeans), along with maybe 4-5 of the tops, which i then just wash out. lol. been really sweating my next road trip, but these tips have eased my packing anxiety.

Great post, thank you for getting right to the point and providing visuals. This summer I packed in a carry on for 4 weeks of hot weather travel and 2 weeks of cold weather. I took 4 Rip Skirts that I could wear both a black and white top with, sandals, sneakers and hiking shoes (which are minimal rom Xero Shoes), 1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of hiking pants, 3 long sleeve tops, 1 fleece and one waterproof windbreaker, plus a nightgown, panties and 3 bras, socks. I had a small bag for the small amount of shopping I did. When a washer and dryer wasn’t available the sink worked fine. I was so glad I didn’t have to lug a large, heavy suitcase on cobbled streets, trains and up and down stairs.

This makes so much sense lol I’m going to nyc for 2 weeks and I do plan on shopping too so packing 1 week worth of clothes is genius

I used to agree with you on the hair dryer until I was caught on a trip with several hotel rooms with no or non working hair dryers. My hair tools are a good round brush and a hair dryer so having a working on is kinda a must. I found a great - small travel sized one and it just lives in my carry on luggage. I also keep one set of "hotel shampoo & conditioner" in my toiletry case because I have stayed in accommodations that did not provide this. The hotel versions were enough until I could get to a store.

Finally! Someone doing a carryon only video who is realistic!

Very practical. Could be more minimal but for people who are struggling to carryon only, it's a good start

FYI: YouTube isn't letting me like this video. You may want to look into this. Happens every now and then, and as a creator of good content you deserve more likes

Good suggestions! Re: shoes, I always bring flip flops as don’t like to walk around hotels barefoot. These work well for pool or beach too.

Editing down outfits as well as sticking to simplified color palette is definitely helpful. I always bring a hairdryer, as using one other people have used is unsanitary IMO, besides the fact that the one provided might be too strong, not strong enough, etc. I also never use provided shampoo, soap, etc as I am sensitive to certain chemicals and added fragrance. No need to bring liquid foundation when stick or even compact powder versions exist.

I created an online list years ago and, like you, I constantly tweak it. I love your idea of color-coding while you pack. A tip I learned from someone online is to turn your underwear inside out so that u can wear them 2x. I hate washing clothes while travelling but your hairdryer tip is a good one. Color coordinating is key with olive greens and khaki working best for me. I just got back from 2 wks in Peru and packed exactly what I needed:
7 prs/underwear, 4/sports bras, 4/long pants (w/side snaps), 3 l/s shirts, 4 s/s tops, ExOfficio mesh sleeve jacket w/hoodie, Royal Robbins all-weather jacket w/re-movable hoodie & sleeves, Keen's Whisper sandals, Merrell Terran Post II sandals, ExOfficio BugsAway Baja Cape hat. All of which were packed in my eBags Mother Load 21" Carry-on Duffel with plenty of room to spare. It is the best bag I've ever owned and I've done a lot of traveling! In addition, I also took my Osprey Pogo backpack and a nylon backpack which comes in it's own zippered bag (for short day trips and or purchases).

First time traveler and this helped so much. I'm only traveling 5 days max, but I was stressing out since it's literally my first time traveling and years since I traveled through an airplane. Last and first time I got in an airplane was a small one I was 14, it's been about 10 years since then. My husband and I are traveling to Washington over the summer and heading to three different cities, one of them being Seattle. My husband was asking me if we needed to bring a raincoat or something, and I told him I'm not sure. Definitely need to look into the weather and do my research on summer weather for Washington specifically the areas we'll be in for those 4 days.
