Oh! This is the book that got me back into reading for leisure! I loved his prose. I loved the first part and it’s probing if time.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on this one!

This is one of those books that I wish I'd been able to read without knowing anything about it. I normally don't care at all about spoilers or knowing too much, but reading a couple of reviews and especially seeing the trailer for the film had a definitely impact on the general feeling of it for me.

i recently read it and was disappointed by the ending. and very frustrated with that ex who was just saying "you still don't get it", "you don't understand" all the time. it was so frustrating like she knew she was a character in the mystery and she cannot tell it soon enough. because who talks like that?...

Ahhh, sorry that it didn't work for you! When I re-read it, I went for the audiobook version, and it makes the first part a little easier (that part can drag a bit, but it does a lot of set-up for later). For me, a lot of the appeal comes from Tony being so awful but finding different ways throughout of making himself feel like (and look like) the 'good guy', so that by the time you get to the later part of the book, you start trying to read Tony through other characters. You then focus more on what they are saying, as you get the sense (see what I did there) that they know far more than Tony ever will, or more than Tony will ever let on that he knows, and you basically start forming the theory that you should presume the opposite of almost everything he thinks (i.e. that Veronica is being unreasonable, or that he cared about his friend). I may be somewhat blinded by nostalgia as I read it soon after it came out and loved it!

Also, I cackled at 'Also known as Bridget Jones's dad.' Brilliant!

Oh man. I love Sense of an Ending, but I get it. I took convincing myself to keep reading - back in the days when I didn't DNF books to keep reading... 🍞🥐🥨🥖🥯

I remember reading The Sense of an Ending some time ago. Watching your review I realise that I’ve forgotten most of what happens in the book - I remember disliking the characters and the twist at the end coming as a bit of surprise and source of confusion for me. Perhaps I need to reread it at some point.
Also really enjoyed your discussion on what makes an unreliable narrator.

WHAT DO THE 500 POUNDS MEAN?! I need to know! hahahahaha who is the father!? was there an affair? this book messed with my head. explain this math equation to me cause I still don't get it. ANY OF IT.
love this review and agree that part 1 sucks, part 2 makes the whole book.
I feel like memory in general is an unreliable source of facts, independent of whose memory we are talking about. when remembering any event of telling a story we always select certain things that we identify with or that were important for us or even that we chose (sometimes unconsciously) to push away. there is no truth in the end, just versions thereof.

Hear initial comments, look at score, look up Booker books shortlisted for 2011 - don't know any of them - was this the 'best book'? Don't add to my TBR. Get back to enjoying Offshore - the 1979 'compromise' Booker.
