If Qui-Gon wasn’t as big a gambler as he was he would’ve waited for Obi-Wan before charging in, he just really needed that money to buy a bunch of snacks.

Maul's attack potency may have gotten him the win over Qui-Gon, but Qui-Gon wasn't really in his prime anymore, he was 60 years old in TPM.

In the TPM Novels, Qui-gon was actually very strong and backed up maul everytime witj each strike and maul was shocked of how strong he was cause maul couldnt out strength him(due to force argumentation)

That battle iq explanation was good people bee sleeping on mauls iq so much they just think he’s a guy who attacks anyone with rage without even thinking about it dude literally in he’s battle against qui and Obi was just leading them to a place so he could separate them and that way take advantage of the 2v1 which work on he’s favor in a 1v1 I believe maul in that point was better than them but in 2v1 he had no chance so he had to separate them in order to beat them know between him and Obi wan I believe Obi has better battle iq I mean Obi wan is know to be the most intelligent Jedi in terms of battle he’s been able to beat so many strong sith because of how good of strategist he his. the only one who could beat him in that category was dooku cause he was the only sith who never let he’s guard down or rely he’s full trust on he’s power he knew he wasn’t young and if he wanted to keep up to likes of Obi and anakin at the same time he needed to be smart in he’s battle

W edit and you can argue the diff could be even high maul was outright worried of jinn and separated him from kenobi due to his prowess

Also their was going to be a scene where when they were separate maul was going to bandage cuts on his arms implying jinn did damage

Having read the novels this duel is far more close than people realise. Maul was both exhilarated and afraid when qui gon began driving him back. From his duel on tattooine maul had to develop a full plan to beat qui gon. He admits he couldn’t beat him head on hence why he brought him to the cooling pit

Qui Gon wasn’t the strongest, but he was the wisest, even more than Yoda himself. Dooku knew that, that’s why he warned him he wouldn’t be able to protect him right before they went back to Naboo. If the Jedi Council wasn’t so stubborn and arrogant and had listened to Dyas, Dooku and Qui Gon, they would have found the Sith Lord before starting a Galactic War.
