Dell XPS 1730 Dual GPU failure / black screen Reflow Repair
This Del laptop is very nice but will fail if its not maintained by cleaning out the heatsinks. This Dual GPU video card runs in SLI mode and really performs well for gaming or CAD.
If you run into video problems please call us at the shop we would be happy to repair it for you.
We offer reflows, reballs and new chip replacements for bad GPUs.

That is a really nice laptop! Thanks for the upload, I like watching these as much as I like to do this. I used to hate when a laptop came into the shop, but really learned to like working on them, now it is more of a passion :)

The consensus among the members on forums dedicated to this machine is quite final: X9000 is the highest we can go with this model. The quad-core doesn't work. However, an X9000 with throttle stop on this model will get you a LOT of GHz out of that beast, which should plenty of performance.

That's some serious graphics horsepower in a laptop! So the cause of failure is the GPU's got so hot from lack of cooling with clogged fins that the solder melted and lifted contacts from the board, WITHOUT cooking the chip itself???

I'm also a bit surprised you don't use an anti-static mat and wristband on your bench. I guess it's humid enough down in FL you don't need to worry about static buildup. :P

That is neat how you did that. I have an older Dell laptop which I don't use due to the screen going blank after 10 minutes and believe it is due to the GPU chip getting too hot. If the lid is closed for about a minute then opened up again the screen comes on normally for about 2 minutes then does the same thing. I don't work on laptops so I don't want to get into that and don't have the equipment you all have.

you said that we could use a quad core? i have an xps 1730 X7800 extreme, dual 9800gtx's, 6g ram, i was wanting to max out the ram and CPU and possibly the graphics cards if its possible, i heard the best i could go on CPU was the x9000? is that true? can you let me know the best and maxed out combination i can install? i like the laptop and don't want to spend another 2-3 grand on an allienware to get the quad config. when i could possibly just upgrade this one? it doesn'

Hey. I have a MSI gaming laptop and it turns off immediately after turning on. Originally, it would reset during games. After a few weeks of that, it reset when it was plugged into the AC adapter. I bought a new adapter and it still did that and eventually it would turn off after being turned on regardless of being plugged in or out (with and without the battery). Do you recommend that I reflow the motherboard/gpu? I believe it to be a motherboard issue but I'm not sure. Thanks!

I have this exact laptop and have gone through several graphics cards because of that problem. I have one brand new graphics card left that I'm going to have to change in the next day or two. I have two graphics cards that need to be refluxed. Do you still do that? Would you be able to do it on both graphics cards and test it or would I have to send you the laptop along with the two cards that need to be repaired? Please let me know if you still do that work and how much it would be for two graphics cards.

I tried to remove the fan assemblies on my video card. However it appears they are glued to the heat sink. Any suggestions on how to remove the fans without damaging the card?

hello Mixcatcom, i was thinking of repairing my M1730 but when i saw your video with the millions of screws lol i was like F'that.

Do you guys have a Canadian partner that can repair my BSOD? i believe it is the SLi 8800M that went. The system turns on but the screen and the little display doesnt turn on.

i bought a new gaming tower as i'm not to sure on gaming laptops i have to leave on for afking in game. need something with more ventilation.

how much do you charge for the service minus the cost of a new card set?
