The Chain Fountain

The beads are the type you get on office blinds. A larger version of the beads you get on dog tags.

Slow mo video and explanation here:

Search for metal 4.5mm bead chain on ebay to get the same as these. You can buy several short chains and link them together. The same search will bring up the links too.

Glad you enjoyed the show. Would love to get into modeling this but it's a bit beyond me capabilities.

much more impressive when watching a ship anchor chain doing this, except on the ship when you see this you know you are about to lose your chain your anchor and your job, lol .

The beads are actually really flexible. You can put a tight bend it them without forcing it. They're the type of beads you get on office blinds.

I'm trying to figure out if I can do it with those beads they use to separate the lanes in a swimming pool. Will obviously post the vid if I do it!

My dad was a shop fitter in the 80s and brought home a reel of this stuff( from bank pens) and showed us the same trick!

I showed this to my grand children and they used it for "show and tell" at their school....everyone wanted to see it multiple times...and it sparked a good discussion in their classes

Hey Steve! Congratulations on making the cover of "The American Journal of Physics" (Feb2020)!! One of the diagrams on the front cover (from an article on the behaviour of chains) prominently features the "Mould Fountain". Never mind "Time" or "Rolling Stone"... this is what it means to arrive in my book!

I can’t believe I just remembered that I have met you 5 years ago at a lecture somewhere, just realised you do these lectures all over the place but it’s cool to know that I have seen you demonstrate this in front of me

So, that's where all this started

Interesting stuff! Yes, I've found regular chain doesn't form a loop at all.

Yep! Have a look in the description for how to get them.
