I worked for a short time at a firm in the Financial District in NYC. I'll never forget a response to a question I heard in a meeting on my first day:

"What about late fees?"
"Well, that's how we make our money"

Immediately followed by a casual, yet diabolical chuckle from everyone in the room. It felt gross.

I got fired 2 weeks later because I don't have the sociopathic constitution to steamroll someone on the phone into a sale the way the other telemarketers did. But this job gave me a peek into the minds of most of these finance people. They just *don't care* about anyone that isn't making them money. Not even other people in their own industry.

Most people think everything slows down before an economic downturn, the reality is the economy goes over the cliff with the accelerator pushed to the floor.

Still stand by that.

It’s apparent that the once younger generations are getting older and proving that not teaching basic financials in HS and college are really paying off for banks, consumer markets and political contributions from the prior. Job well done.

As an economist, the only more terrifying thing than when things go wrong is when they should go wrong and they don't.

It's beyond ominous. And that "bonuses" takes me right back to 2008.

Unload those corporate funds banky boys, who know if in 2028 you'll have to reach for the taxpayer.

People aren't borrowing because they want to... they are borrowing out of necessity.

When they spiked interest rates it was obvious what was and still is happening. "Fighting inflation" was a good way of phrasing it, but all that happened was the banks starting netting *significantly* more and individual American home sellers started netting less. Nothing changed for homebuyers; if anything, it worsened. You might purchase the house for a lower price, but the heightened interest offset that amount you saved plus some. Bad for both American homeowners and American homebuyers. Great for banks. The system wasn't built for us, it was built for them.

Been saying it for a couple yrs now - ppl can trash talk banks but as long as they keep going to banks and borrowing, they have only themselves to blame.

Fun fact:
"Bonuses" were just the next item on the agenda and not part of the previous topic of discussion.
