Those "cut out bits on the trailer " are reinforcing panels covering the lifting mechanism guides of the rise and fall floor deck inside. There are 4 guides in total, 2 each side of the trailer. It's a double decker trailer that has a raising/lowering 2nd deck to allow loading and unloading from the back doors via a loading bay dock, of both decks. Fixed deck double deckers are usually always curtain sided to allow access to the top deck from the sides too via a fork lift truck. This was a box type double decker trailer usually built by Tiger, Don burr or Cartrights trailer manufacturers.
