How Jack Charlton changed Irish football
Finding Jack Charlton - out on Blu Ray, DVD, and Digital Download now.

Jack Charlton is considered the figurehead to some of the biggest triumphs in Irish football. Leading the Republic of Ireland to its first European Championship in 1988, the Quarter Finals in its first World Cup in 1990 and, four year later, the knockout stages of USA ‘94.

But his influence on the whole nation went further than success on the pitch. At a time when the people of Ireland were leaving the country in search of opportunity, Charlton gave them a reason to come back.

This Tifo Football video was written by Seb Stafford-Bloor and illustrated by Philippe Fenner.

He'll never forgotten. He might be an English World Cup hero but he'll always be an Irish legend. Rest in Peace big Jack.

And despite Jack’s great work, domestic football in Ireland has continued to be neglected and mistreated while those who run the FAI lined their own pockets.

Only TIFO could have an English man tell the story of what Jack means to Ireland, and not mis-step. On the money guys.

It takes a very very special Englishman to be an Irish legend

Big Jack, absolute legend.

Leeds United always has strong Irish players, with Gary Kelly, Ian Harte, Robbie Keane and Johnny Giles as notable names, but Jack was our way of saying thanks.

RIP

Big Jack was a working class hero. Adored and loved on both sides of the Irish sea. Fantastic video TIFO. Really enjoyed this.

I'm genuinely shocked to see an English person accurately and respectfully recount an element of Irish history. Well done!

I was only 6 during Italia 90. I wish I had been a bit older to remember it better because it was probably the most amazingly fun time to ever have been in Ireland. As legendary columnist Con Houlihan once said. "Italia 90? I missed it....I was in Italy at the time."

The stories of Ireland from the 90s are amazing, I wish one day I can experience something like that as fellow young Irish man.

Very well put together. Shows you what the English and Irish can do when we come together. As an Irishman I have a love of Jack that brings me tears as it was a great time for our country. Reminds me of my father and a lot of good memories with family at the time. He really loved Ireland.

Memories came flooding back watching this. I can vividly recall after beating Romania the whole street came out and had a kick about. Dads, sons, brothers all had an impromptu pass around up and down the street. In the best possible way the whole country lost the plot. In many ways it was the spark that lit the economic fire that engulfed the country not soon after. We dared to dream after Italia 90. Thanks Big Jack.
