The point of the Sherlock Holmes' stories are they give us a mystery, but also a study of Holmes' character. The brilliance of being in the perspective of Watson, gives us that distance that Watson has. If we were in the mind of Sherlock Holmes, he would seem less of the intricate, mysterious character that he is. Rather than the stories making us feel like we are the character, it's suppose to give us an immersion of how it feels to be with the character. To experience what Watson does. Which would be our experience, as we are not Holmes. I read all the Holmes books, and a great deal of the mysteries can be solved through Watson's perspective. Of course, not always all at once, but plenty can be reasoned out after the statement of the case. It's always fun to think up the next step to solving the mystery, by using the information you have. Especially if it aligns with Holmes' inquires. I'm glad you enjoyed it to some extent. I read a few Poirot stories, but they don't grab me like Holmes' mysteries. Holmes' mysteries are more on the fantastic, described as realism pushed to its extremes. Poirots mysteries are indeed captivating, but I prefer the cold analytical aesthetic of mystery solving that Holmes displays, while Poirot's is closer to analyzing the minds of the indiviuals involved. From what I remember, they withhold information too. But I guess it's just preference. I love Holmes and Poirot nevertheless.

I had the same thought when I was listening to an audiobook version of this, as I’d never read a physical version the second half of the story taking place so far away from the characters I expected to be reading about slightly irritated me.

Adding this to my tbr!
What do you think of Poirot then? He usually keeps all of his findings to himself until the end!

I am a big Sherlock Holmes fan however I am not a massive fan of the 4 Sherlock Holmes novels and I much prefer the collection of short stories.

The second part threw me for a loop. I'm not sure why Doyle put it there. 😆...

I just started the complete Sherlock Holmes after never having read it all these years and only seen the Sherlock spin off movies.

Brilliant writing, historical work about a historical character.

I read this story as a kid, and it made such an impression on me, that when I grew up and Salt Lake City Olympics happened in 2002, I was wondering is it completely safe to do this in the Mormon capital, although I knew already that they are not mafia, but just another sect.

I also thought that there was something wrong with my copy of the book when the new characters were introduced 😂

For me, the part 2 was way too much confusing as there was some original historical incidents related to the plot of the novel and we got into a whole different continent and different characters. But you know, the novel was really worth reading.

What I like about the original novels and stories is you learn about the characters. Not just the main ones. At times, Holmes or Dr. Watson will sometimes refer to situations or characters from their past in future stories. This is done briefly, as would you or I in recalling a relevant situation that would come in handy. Perhaps how to handle a similar current experience. I enjoy seeing the situation from the eyes of Dr. Watson. This is a story, not just a puzzle. As far as adaptations, I have never seen any movie or show adaptation even remotely close to The original Frankenstein. That is a wonderful book!
