We've been renovating our homestead on New Zealand's North Island for three months non-stop and have made lots of DIY renovations on our home and land, but with summer on the horizon, I need to explore more of our surroundings off of the homestead. Join me for a video of exploration, surf, wild coastlines, and some thoughts on life in another full episode of our Homestead Renovation Series.

I'm Alex, I'm a travel filmmaker, photographer, and TV host. On this channel, I'll share my journey renovating a homestead in New Zealand as well as detailed travel guides, motivational and inspirational videos from lessons I've learned during my life, and cooking recipes from international cuisine using vegetables grown in my home garden. Hopefully, my videos will help you learn new skills, find happiness, inspire exploration, and grow your creativity. Stay tuned friends!

Honestly, I love watching Alex and Carrie’s videos. They feel so wholesome. 🥺 Probably one of the few channels that doesn’t make us want to buy things we don’t need but actually live our lives. So damn inspiring. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

Life is fun because of its variation in pace. Your vid’s feel like catching up on the normal ebbs and flows of life with lovely folks. So don’t worry if each episode is not jam packed, it’s still nice to have that feeling of sharing over a cuppa with such nice people.☕️👍🏼

Ever since this lockdown started, I've been looking for a different outlook on life to have as I realised how unhappy I am, being stuck in a constant need of seeking instant gratification. I just found your channel and videos recently and it has really helped me understand my bad thought processes and helped me consciously choose better though and behaviour models. Thank you, I appreciate the education and helping to alter my life trajectory to a better, more fulfilling place.

For those larger holes Alex, plug them with your own wooden plugs. Make a plug from a board by using a hole saw larger than the hole then chisel it angled so you can then glue and hammer in place and cut it flush and sand down to level. Use a darker hole filler on the nail holes, gives a more realistic overall effect, but it’s a personal choice. Poly the floors with a good 2 or more coats. It’s damn hard work but you learn so much and get a real satisfaction from giving it a go by yourself, and your self confidence grows along with it. Keep on doing what you are doing mate. Congratulations on what you both have achieved so far.

I appreciate the effort you make to create videos while fixing up your homestead. It's not easy. You're doing a awesome job bro. Stay on the grind, it's a long journey but your hard work will pay off in the end.

Thank you very much for taking the time to make these videos Alex. We all really appreciate it and are behind you 😊Really like your philosophy on life and totally agree. I've learnt that one of the main sources of happiness is progressive realisation of goals, rather than just achieving the goals. Enjoying the little steps on the way, being totally present and appreciating each moment rather than seeing each moment as just a means to an end destination. Awesome work my man! 👍

Love the expansive conversations! I appreciate how much effort you have put into your weekly videos On Top of all the work of renovating your home + tending to the land and animals. It's more than okay to ease up on filming everything for every video. I can completely relate to the frustration of projects not going as fast as anticipated and then feeling a bit overwhelmed. Thank you for the reminder that instant gratification is not how we were meant to thrive. Your weekly insights and chats are so helpful!

Awesome vid, Alex. My personal opinion is that being real, as you are, makes for much better content than an artfully curated spectacle anyway. Just keep doing what you're doing, warts and all, it's excellent. As for the surfing disappointment, I feel that we are all being encouraged to lose attachment to things. It seems to be an oft repeated lesson until that realisation dawns, then it gets easier. Have a great week. 😊

Really happy you're doing the floors now. When I had a large flood in my home I found out my floors were stunningly original and for what now seemed only an extra couple of weeks of inconvenience and a few hundred dollars I didn't get them polished. Regretted it tremendously. I loved 'the old girl' she taught me lots. The way her bones creaked when the air cooled and the French doors welcomed the light with views to liquid amber trees I planted 25 years ago... you'll sit back soon and just love her (and Carrie of course) more for what she's giving you back. It's not just a house you bought anymore. So much more than that.

Your content is awesome Alex and you are truly a fine example of delayed gratification. Really felt for your surf trip that wasn't to be and the positives you took out of it, even though it was a real bummer. Thank you for sharing your world with us all.

Hey Alex I just wanted to say that these videos you are creating are by far my favourite of any creator on YouTube at the moment, you and your partner are only a few years older than us, me and my partner are 29 and 30, we live in Auckland and your videos are basically portraying our exact dream for when we finish up with our business in Auckland right down to the location you picked, it’s like I’m watching our future. It’s comforting in a way. I’m learning an incredible amount. Mostly around you don’t have to be an expert in something to give it a shot. its great watching you and your partner navigate different renovations around the house that me and my partner would have definitely paid someone to do. Purely out of fear we would ruin something, you’re helping us change that mindset and it’s probably one of the most valuable lessons I’ll learn going into my 30s, it’s better to try and mess up than to not try at all :) I can’t wait to see where your homestead is at when we get to the point of purchasing ours! All the best! Jessie- (we were the people who dropped off a spin bike to your miq hotel) :)

Alex don't be so hard on yourself. Your video was really enjoyable to watch. We all understand your under a lot of pressure renovating your new home. For someone not used to do DIY jobs you are doing a wonderful job and creating a beautiful home that day one you'll both look back and be very proud of all your hard work. It will be something you will treasure in the future. Its hard work and all the projects I'm sure are very overwhelming at times but it will one day be complete. Enjoy the process and journey your on. We all I'm sure appreciate the effort you put into your video and getting out each week but if you miss a week your subscribers will understand. You have a lot on so try not to over do it either.
Ps when the pandemic has passed and the world is safe to travel freely again. You should visit Bundoran, Co Donegal Ireland for some of the best surf in the world.
Thanks for your continued hard work and your honesty in your videos. Enjoy your weekend xx

Cheers Alex.... great work - as far as the content goes, as long as you're keeping your audience in the loop it shouldn't be a problem: 1 video a month, bi monthly, quarterly - don't put so much pressure on yourself - no content maker - no content -no channel. We had breakfast this morning and watched this update... thank you. Be well.

Love the realness and honesty of this video, Alex! Just this morning I was re-visiting the book Atomic Habits by James Clear and what you are talking about here in this video felt so aligned with the message of his book. Made me think of this passage specifically: "The purpose of setting goals is to win the game. The purpose of building systems is to continue playing the game. True long-term thinking is goal-less thinking. It's not about any single accomplishment. It's about the cycle of endless refinement and continuous improvement. Ultimately it is your commitment to the process that will determine your progress." You sticking to sharing this video even when its not the 'flashiest' or whatever, is a reflection of your true commitment to the process of building the home and life of your dreams! When you look back on this video and any others like it, it's all going to make sense. They're all valuable pieces to the puzzle that's building a beautiful, intentional life! <3
