Transitional housing for former foster youth and transition age youth

Come with me as I tour a transitional housing unit, which is an apartment for young adults who have recently aged out of foster care.

These housing units are so important to the health and wellness of young people as they often do not have the resources or friends and family to help them transition into adulthood. United Friends of the Children is an example of a nonprofit who steps in to help. They offer furnished apartments, along with career readiness programs and mental health support. There is no cost to live in these apartments or residents can contribute a monthly rent that is saved for them until they move out. 100% of their saved rent money is returned to them.

If you are interested in helping transition-age youth, you can reach out directly to @unitedfriendsla or search for a nonprofit in your community. They often are in great need of donations, gifts in kind, or even volunteers to support events or help provide career advice and support.

Have you supported a transition age youth? Let us know your experiences in the comments below! ⬇️💛

I've wanted to adopt teens who were about to age out just so we could show them a real family who would be there forever. Holidays, visits home all through life, a family who calls and sends packages to surprise them with smiles, care packages while in college if they don't live with us, a papa to walk the girls down the aisle and a mama bear who will text them with love. We want that.. I'm so hopeful it will happen someday.

Please consider donating locally for transition services - this program sounds awesome but most foster kids don't have access to this level of support. please donate generously in your local community too

I was in a program like this! It's called SOAR house in stephenville Texas, I know cleburne also has a similar program. It's been life changing and I hope that more resources are made available to former foster and at risk homeless youth ❤
I got completely free therapy and very cheap rent (150 a month), apt is fully furnished and has a full kitchen. They helped me get my driver's license, taught me to cook, do my taxes, and applying for school and work.
Everyone there was so kind to me and I wouldn't have been in a good place in life without their help and support.
Alot of former foster youth aren't aware of these types of resources, im super glad you're drawing attention to these programs.
If youre under the age of 24-23 you might be surprised how many resources are available to giving at risk youth a helping hand, don't be afraid to research programs in your area.

This is beautiful, I remember being 13 in foster care and hearing stories of kids being kicked out when they turned 18 with no resources to help them. I was fully terrified of that happening to me, I'm so happy to see that foster children are being supported into their adult life like this!

This looks a lot like a college dorm, a place a lot of folks who aren’t in foster care got to live in to transition between being a kid and a full-on adult.

Love it!

This program saved my life! It's a little different in my state, they charge based off income (30%) or $25 if no income is being made. They have coaches that meet up with you either monthly or quarterly depending on your program and keep helping you move up.
I started in a small one bedroom for $25 and worked my way up to a house in this program. Now I've been off the program for years and it was so so helpful

I'm glad that there is starting to be a focus on how to successfully transition foster youth who are too old for the foster care system and did not manage to gain a permanent stable family situation and consequently may not have the life skills or stability to successfully transition into adulthood.

The rent idea is genuis, and so thoughtful! Gosh, your channel does nothing but restore my faith in our world and teach me about being a parent, even thought I havent even graduated highschool. ❤

I was fortunate enough to grow up in a two parent, stable, loving household. My parents always had the means to support me. I had the privilege of dropping out of school and living with my parents until I got on my feet.

I can’t imagine growing up without that, then being expected to be fully independent at 18.

This is really important!!! I am a foster kid who will be 18 in a few months and my goal is independence. Sharing about communities that support older teens and adults who went through foster care is so important. I’m grateful for all the benefits I can receive from the support of my community <3 it takes a village, folks!
