Ultra Premium Charcoal Test Charblox, Prime 6, Blazing Coco, Cocobriq

There has been a slew of ultra premium and ultra expensive charcoals on the market recently so I thought I would put some of them to the test against each other to see if they are worth the extra money. Of course YOU will be the one to decide that in the end for yourself, but I did some head to head comparisons to test the ease of lighting, how hot they got, and how long they burn so you can decide if it is something you might consider.

You can find links to the Charcoals below if you would like to order some to test

These premium charcoal blocks need to be started in a chimney to preheat and could take 20 minutes depending on the brand before they are ready to cook anything. Good for yakitori cooking.

Awesome video. Thanks for the effort. Approximately how long does it take for Charblox to light and does it need to be turned over once lit? Thanks

Thank you for doing this video. I bought a bunch of Prime 6 at my local grocery (end of season sale) and it is nice to see my experience vindicated. I knew it was different than briquettes but I didn't expect this kind of learning curve.

Just started using the ogatan style block charcoal(bincho grill brand but probably similar to prime 6), to light you would put over a burner until full lit, not just a little on the top so really need to light it the way it is meant to be done, you wouldn't want to use a hand torch as you'd be sitting there quite awhile. I use a cheap butane burner with propane attachment and it is 20 min pretty consistently for full light. Once fully lit it is easily 700-800 degrees and will last a LONG time. You can cook, extinguish(I'm down to just using a small smokey joe which is really air tight), relight 3-4x or more so should take that into account vs cheaper charcoals where you may get 1, maybe 1.5 uses at most and a ton of ash to clean up. My main use is for skewers so haven't tried it for low and slow, it does extinguish pretty easy so that may be tough but the japanese designed it primarily for skewers I believe where you never have it fully covered. For $40 I think I'll have enough for at least half the summer for decent personal use and very small foot print in the garage.
