The best place to be explored in Catania with all five senses
is the traditional open-market. At Carlo Alberto square stand
one of two traditional open-markets of the city, respectively, a
"a Fera o luni" ("Monday fair", since once, the market used to
take place only during the first day of the week). The streets
around get a special, energetic charm. Hundreds of tourists
pass by, take pictures, try, buy and enjoy that magic.
The "Fera o Luni" takes place every day, except the Sundays,
on Carlo Alberto square. One can find for example typical
delicatessen, local cheese, vested in the nearby of Catania, in
the fertile Piana south of Catania. A large part of the market is
constitued by stands selling clothes and shoes: thousands of
coloured, nice and cheap articles. At the heart of market, hidden
among the stands, one authentic jewel: "The Sanctuary of the
Madonna del Carmine". The facade is made of three bodies
side by side and in the middle, above the door, inserted a
statue of the Madonna. The church was built in 1729, more
or less when the greatest buildings of Catania after the terrible
earthquake of 1693. The church is a sanctuary run by the
Carmelite monks and contains thousands of votive offerings left
by people who have received grace through the intercession of
Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
