So... an autonomous region of a Turkic-speaking people in Moldova that actually speaks Russian but it's organized like in the Ottoman Empire but the people is Orthodox Christian. Yep... seems legit.

The fall of the USSR has left a lot of weird legacies in Moldova. In this episode we study Găgăuzia.

Let's explore!

How the Gagauzes ended up in Moldova is no mystery. They ended up in the area the same way the Bulgarians from Taraclia and Bolgrad as well as the Bulgarian villages north of the Azov sea around Melitopol and Berdyansk - it was a combination of voluntary migration and being dragged into the area by the Russian army during various Russo-Ottoman wars in the 18-19 century.

The Russians needed to populate the area north of the Black Seas which was still very empty after being conquered from the nomads. The Christian populations in the Balkans were considered a good fit for the purpose and were enticed/forced. The 1806-1812 war definitely included a large amount of people going north with the Russians. So did the Diebitsch war (1828-29). This is well established in Bulgarian historiography. Those two waves were indeed the biggest, though there were others before and after.

The Gagauzes specifically lived and some still live around Varna, Kavarna, Balchik.

28:15 ))) nice) Although the allegory would be more correct if Moldova was unchained or something ) What's also interesting who is the Hero who opened the coffin? Who is the Savior? )

22:58 I am more than sure that this happened due to some Russian influence...

Wow! We should do a DNA test on these people to see where they come from. Are they really Turks, or maybe Turkish-speaking Greeks? Also, what's the deal with that place between Romania, Moldova and Ukraine next to the Black Sea? Looks like a good real estate, but apparently no one lives there or smth?

Moldova is phucked. Still, this region seems more prosperous and I suspect Jewish blood to thank for it.
