About this video:

Trey Anastasio's guitar style has always been an enigmatic, evolving lynchpin of Phish' music. In this video, I try to decode some of his approaches by analyzing the 6.17.04 version of Free, as played by Phish and featured on the Phish Live In Brooklyn DVD/CD set.

No copyright infringement is intended, I only use video/audio portions of Phish's official content to educate and inform fellow fans and musicians.

Video series should be called “why people hate phish and why people hate me”

I am not a guitar player but I love Phish. I could watch these vids all day. Amazing quality and I really appreciate the effort you put into this.

Amar I just want to say these videos you're making are super interesting and appreciated. As a long time fan who almost never bothers to get close enough to actually see how each member is constantly feeding and reading the others without and words being spoken. Seeing exactly how they're bouncing between related chords, communicating all the while improvising for minutes on end....I honestly can't really respect them anymore than I already do but wow...your videos are showing me exactly why I've been a fan since the very first time I heard them.

I see you haven't posted in over a year - hope you're well brother.

I don't know how or why I haven't discovered your channel unti now, but I am so gratedful! I am a music teacher, classically trained pianist, and have advanced degrees inn music theory, and am a HUUUUGE phish fan. I've been transcribing phish (for piano and analysis) for decades, just for fun. I would love to share and discuss! I'm about to binge watch all of your videos! This is my geek-out paradise! :)

In case its not clear many of us say your jam analysis amazing.

Appreciate not only your analysis but your willingness to share your thoughts. Much of what you say in many ways goes through my mind (though not the technical knowledge)...but the desire to look at every little piece of a jam and talk about it.

Please keep doing, In small way you making many peoples day better with this analysis....your work is acknowledged and appreciated.

Peace

Since "Live in Brooklyn" got released, that version "Free" has been one of my all-time favorite jams, nice work! Would love to see one of these for the "Walfredo" from Trey's acoustic tour back in March.

Hi Amar,

Your work is so strong that you have caused me to break my "I never comment" rule. I am deeply impressed. You have managed to work into your video aspects of a good music theory conference presentation, a good pedagogical system for comprehending the band's non-verbal cues, and multi-platform resources, including your transcription of Trey's solo.

I can only assume that you have a strong background in music theory?

Great work. As one PRS lover (and owner) to another, keep making that axe sound like a Languedoc! If you have a free moment, I would like to make some helpful constructive criticisms, with the intent of helping to make your very good work even stronger. Let me know if there is a way to reach you.

Thanks again! Very inspiring work.

Can't tell you how valuable it is to see a breakdown like this, the end of the playthrough with tabs is a godsend to figuring out how Trey goes through patterns, thank you!

I know I’m three years late to this video, but I just wanna day how awesome all the videos you’ve done on Phish are amazing. Also I feel as if 2004 often gets overlooked for a few reasons. First it started with the disaster that was Vegas and was bookended by another one in Coventry. But if you forget this shows and dive into the June and August shows, you will find so much incredible music. I didn’t miss a single show between 7/29/03 -3/8/09. While Starlake > IT was easily the best week of shows between that time, June 04 was absolutely awesome. A perfect example is the Julius from 6/20/04. Trey shredded it so hard, he broke a string onstage for the first time in like 20 years

This is heat, love the analysis on the whole band that goes very unnoticed in almost all other Phish/Dead guitar lessons. Once you start playing w a regular group you realize how much another member's playing can lift up your own

Hi Amar ... was passed your Great Went vid. From one musician and Phish enthusiast to another, your videos rock on so many levels. I didn't think my appreciation could be deepened... and rarely have I seen complex music ideas shared so fluently without dumbing down or getting to wordy or snobby. Nice frickin' job!!! And.. making a great video isn't easy either! I hope Phish get to see your work... kudos!!
