The rivets are perfect i once fell asleep on a chipmunk wing after a party at the mossie museum my face was an exact copy of the rivets yes the cockpit is a coal hole all black great review brings back childhood memories of watching my father restore WP790 and later on i helped restore the same aircraft

Love the look of this kit, mate. I may have to change my build order and make this my first 1:48 build. I'll be doing the RN scheme, just because I'm ex RN LOL. Thanks for the review :)

Thanks for the review Nigel. Many, many years since I made a model but this one is tempting me back as I flew quite a few hours in Chipmunks as a cadet. The planes were very heavily used but in fairly reasonable condition externally, however cockpits were really scratched up and worn inside. As someone has already said - no cushion when you flew in the back, you sat on your parachute. If anyone puts figures in, remember to put a small one in the back if depicting a 60’s/70’s RAF version!

You've been busy. Lots of videos today. Great loved it. Love how airfix supplies jigs.

What a nice kit, it looks like Airfix is little by little, really stepping up their game. I've been watching a lot of videos featuring this company. They're making a lot of great new innovations. Thank you for the review Nigel. See you soon.

Great review Nigel and as usual very candid and honest. On the back of it I’ve just ordered one from Jadlam Toys & Models and in addition the cockpit P.E set which there selling along side it.
Like many of the comments below it’s brings back memories….

Nigel, step 5 part B16 is the floating compass, if memory serves…

The RNHF Chipmunk at Yeovilton is painted Light Aircraft Grey and Red, but you've probably discovered that yourself by now. Nice review, enjoyed it. I've got six of them to build.

Nice review. Now I will have to wait for it to arrive here in the Far East and grab one. I wonder if they will bring out a Canadian version with the 'blown' canopy at a later stage.

Nigel, The thing on the bulkhead you were pondering, is the oil tank. The reason it is so big is because the Gypsy Major dumped half of it on every flight.

Good review as ever Nigel. There is already a cockpit 3D decal set out for this kit. Plus I think a Photo Etch one. Looking at the pictures of the schemes. It looks like all 4 schemes do not have the side windows with the extra framework on them. Maybe Airfix are going to release a different version in the future? Although I had my 1st ever flight in an aircraft in a Chipmunk (13/14 year old Air Cadet flight 1976). I do not think its a subject I would build.

Looks like a awesome little kit Nige...besides the pilots, but fortunately I never put pilots in my models, unless in flying display, as they tend to hide away too much of the cockpit detail😬 Now to see when this arrives at my local boys😏😁

Nice review, more importantly no sinkage, looks like a lot of fun rather than filling and sanding 😊😊😊😊

I would imagine the numbers saying “166” and the black line pointing to the undersides would suggest it’s Light Aircraft Grey. ;-)

Great review Nigel of what looks a beautiful kit
If it’s any help re colours, i think initially 1950’s they were Painted “ Silver/Aluminium ” with yellow trainer band, around the early 1960’s they stated adding Dayglo paint to certain areas tail / engine cowl / wing tips, but this started to fade quickly etc, then they started adding dayglo stick on strips etc, around 67/68 ish the silver was replaced with light aircraft gray and still with the dayglo stick on strips etc, then around the early 1970’s they were painted in the Red, White, light aircraft gray scheme, I think the Royal Navy were again initially sliver/ aluminium dayglo, then again went to light aircraft gray, then again 1980’s ?? LAG with Red replacing the dayglo

If I’m incorrect on any of this, , please forgive me and correct me etc 😎

It's a nice quick build kit cheap to makes a nice change from airfix starting with the best intentions falling low to by the waste to what was promised but still charge you full wack

Here you have a newly tooled 1/48 model with all the detail you could ask for, and they throw in two lumps for pilots, their arms bonded to their sides and not a whit better than the horrible creatures I omitted from my 1/72 planes back in the 60s and 70s. I don't understand why the big kit makers can't provide a figure with, say, a separate posable head, and four arms in different positions.

Kits kind of nostalgic and lovely and still small at 1/48 scale, no wonder i remembered mine was so small at 1/72nd! Was yellow a real colour for those trainers?
