Just because it's Supergirl not Superwoman, doesn't mean Melissa Benoist's character isn't a feminist hero.

Any strong independent female has to be a feminist? Cant they just be a person?

Wait so let me get this straight:
A male superhero = not for everyone.
A female superhero = for everyone.

Look how everyone is crying already because they mentioned feminism in this video. Grow up people.

"Supergirl is as strong for supeman"

Dc doesn't agree.

Damn people didn't even listen to what she said. She's not spewing typical feminist-bullshit. Insecure males just saw the title, got triggered and disliked.

The fact that people automatically hit the dislike because the word feminism says a lot about today's feminist movement.

"and I think that what's feminist about it is that it's for everyone.". Obviously, you haven't been paying attention to feminism. What you just said is like someone saying that the great thing about the KKK is that they're so accepting and tolerant.

She's absolutely great in the show. Problem is, the show treats a female hero like it's something that never existed. You would think this show was written in the '50s by the way they keep on saying that the main hero of the show called Super GIRL is... shock gasp... FEMALE! *Dorothy Zbornak voice* NO! I thought she was an avocado! Most preposterous!!!... Are you THAT insecure, show?

I like her, but the show is not great. It's not bad by any means, but when going up against heavy hitters like The Flash, Daredevil, and Arrow, and with Jessica Jones on the way, it is just a little lacking. I'm actually enjoying this season of Agents of Shield more than I did the pilot of Supergirl.

This is the right way to talk about feminism. Provide and present good role models, don't just whine and toss blame around.

I knew before I even scrolled down, the comment section would be a bunch of people harping about feminism. I'm sure plenty didn't even bother to pay attention to the video, but I'll just say this...

There's already a name for an ideology that promotes equality for all people... it's called "egalitarianism". If anybody actually strives for true equality, stop trying to equate that to feminism. Whether you like it or not, that term has gone from something that should be positive to nothing but hate filled calls to action. These days, a feminist isn't seeking equality, they're seeking superiority. So either you're egalitarian, or you're taking a side... just own up to it.

I'm a male nerd who is secure with himself, who likes strong, smart, hot women and who doesn't think "feminism" is a word crawling with cooties. Like.

I feel like she's completely unaware of what modern feminism is. I also feel kind of bad for her because I'm sure she's going to be enlightened (rather harshly) by thousands of individuals online during the oncoming weeks. At least she'll learn the truth.

Well of course a feminist tv series would portray the villain as a male chauvinistic pig. "Back on my planet the women bow before the men!"

Yeah that's what feminism is all about these days, blaming men for all the inequality. I suppose women who willingly cling to men solely for their money aren't at fault! No arguments against the archaic law of alimony either! What a feminist Kim Kardashian must be for being an empty headed selfie-book publishing glamour queen!
It's not hard to understand the negative connotations that come along with the term "feminism" these days; its message has gradually distorted into that of anti-men.

oh jesus. they always have to shoe horn a feminist message with any female character with any power. just let her be a god damn person and not a 'feminist icon.'

Love how she's becoming a role model for kids, especially young girls. Like in that photo -- those girls aren't just in a SG costume. They're in their Girl Scout uniforms. I think kids today realize that while superheroes might be fictional, the good they accomplish in their fictional world can be achieved by us in real life.
