Hanoi Hannah (Trịnh Thị Ngọ) was a Vietnamese radio personality best known for her work during the Vietnam War, when she made broadcasts in English for North Vietnam, directed at United States troops.
When she says “G.I. Joe” she refers to the soldiers of the United States.

The story of the Vietnam war is a terrible one, and nearly every U.S. soldier had to carry that terrible legacy with them. Of course, this was often without choice. Many soldiers enlisted to further their financial situation. Whilst the G.I. Joe may have thought Hanoi Hannah was threatening, or a propagandist- she was not. She was telling the plain truth; That G.I. Joe has been fooled into fighting a war in a land where his boots do not belong. In this, we can see that whilst the collective body of Imperial Soldiers is enemy to the people, enemy to morality and national self-determination, he is individually also a victim. He is victim to poverty, so much so he must commit his life to fighting a foreign war to advance from poverty. He is himself a victim of the Imperial war machine, forced forward to commit heinous acts and steal land from its righteous owners. The Imperial Soldier suffers as well, for he does not- in most cases- do such actions by free will but by order.


First we must blame the machine which utilizes his hand to kill. Certainly, we should not redeem those who, on their own ruthless volition, killed innocent citizenry. Yet, we must remember not all Imperial soldiers are so ruthless. I am an American citizen and I realize that my nation is a horrible one. It has- at every chance- taken action against self-determination and struck up the largest Empire to ever live. The American Empire has expanded throughout the world, and has constructed a global regulatory body- the United Nations- to do it's bidding. Yet, I realize that not every man of America supports this, nor does every soldier who was sent to this duty. Consider the common electrician who, - in times of American Imperial war- chose to ship to the front-lines to continue this electrical work in higher pay. Is he to be blamed for the atrocities committed by the American Empire? I do not think so, for such an accusation would be without reason. He has never held arms, nor has he killed. He runs wires, repairs circuity- does all the regular mundane actions an electrician would domestically do.


For this reason I must say- whilst we should hate the Imperial war machine with a burning passion, we should not hate the individual components of that machine if they have not acted in ruthless volition. Thank you for your time, and than you for preserving this important piece of history.

They use to broadcast to us Soldiers at Ft Bragg during bivouac and when we crawled under live machine gun fire at Ft Bragg during Basic Training. This was in the 60s. 😅 We also sung cadence while running to Vietnam and Hanoi Hanna songs. One thing I disagree on here is every night they showed news reels of the Vietnam war on American television every night and we actually saw the war and body bags of dead GIs (the body count). We were naive, but not that naive. We were new recruits, but we were not stupid. I post this not to argue but all my drill sergeants already had their CIB badges. 😮 We knew by the stories our Drill sergeants told us as well. 我讨厌战争😢
