A detailed examination of the streetscape of Kyoto using an early 16th century depiction of the city in a magnificent folding screen. One mistake I made was that I called the second major bridge in the screen Shijo Bridge on the fourth avenue of Kyoto. This is incorrect, it is actually the Gojo Ohashi, at the fifth avenue. Sanjo and Gojo Bridges stood on major highways and were supported financially by the Shogunate and were always major bridges. Shijo was a minor bridge until much recently. Thanks to a keen subscriber for pointing this out. If you have watched all three parts of this description, well done!! I am very appreciative.

This was an excellent and informative presentation! If I may offer one small correction, I believe at 26:08 this is actually a depiction of Gojo-bashi. I've seen various depictions and writings eluding to there not being a grand bridge built at Shijo-dori until very late in the 18th century, or even possibly turn of the 19th century (?) Often it is depicted as a split foot bridge down into and out of the riverbed instead. It isn't depicted that way in this screen, it being a minor enough landmark to completely ignore it here, I think.
I'm slowly going through all your presentations, and I'm enjoying them a lot.
