A Footrace Up Cerro Gordo's Deadly Road (Surprise Winner!)

This week we did something really fun! A footrace up our 8 mile dirt road to the abandoned mining town of Cerro Gordo! It is an absolutely brutal run that gains almost a mile in elevation to get there. We had Olympians, ultra-marathon runners, long time friends, and more come out for this. What a day it was!

There is an early bird special to sign up for next year's race, so I hope you'll consider coming out for it. We are going to make it bigger and better than ever!

Mailing Address: PO Box 490, Lone Pine, CA 93545

Thank you so much!!

Hey Brent! My son and I were the first Father/Son team to hike up to Cero Gordo in August of 2021, you saw us when you were riding down on your dirtbike and asked us if we were OK and what we were doing...we said we were hiking to Cero Gordo. You met us at the top after you ran your errands and invited us to stay for lunch after taking a tour around the town. We WILL be back. Just hope you didn't forget about this and even discussed having a future run or race like you have finally done. You definitely told us we were the first Father/Son team to accomplish this and that you had done it but would never do it again. See u soon!

I was never a strong runner and have gotten fat after my Army career ended. This has given me motivation to get back into shape and train for the next years event

In the video I didn’t accomplish my goal of getting last place but there’s always next year! 😅 Thanks everyone for putting this together. Honored to take part in the first race.

Having driven that road several times, I can't imagine running it. Hats off to all who did. Seems like an event that will stick and grow annually. Well done.

As an ex-hiker with spinal damage and sciatica, I can truly respect the challenge this marathon must have been.
So very awesome, the energy this brought to Cerro Gordo.
*Well done Brent!!*

You've got to smelt a different silver prize every year using ore from the mine! The race can become synonymous for it's silver prizes 🥈

Now that's a good use for the Cerro Gordo Yellow Grade Road. 1:46:48 is an impressive first record for an 8 mile uphill slog. Brent you continue to impress with your leadership as the Mayor of Cerro Gordo.

What a great thing! Been with you since the very beginning. I remember stumbling on "I bought an abandoned ghost town" maybe 1 or 2 days after it was posted. I teared up when the AH burned I was filled with hope when Dave Sparks and the Diesel Bros came and helped you with the cement. I worried that you might lose to the big corporate miners. Then the road washed out. You fixed it. You had to take some time away. NOW, it's starting to get to the point where you can enjoy as we say in the music biz "the blues from the dues that you've been paying." Congrats, Brent. You absolutely deserve it. I'm up in Washington State and I definitely hope to get down there one of these days. Maybe I'll bring a couple folks and have some musical goodness. Your face says it all. Enjoy man. The accomplishments are great and you are the fire.

This channel has easily became my favorite on YouTube. I can hardly believe how long it's been and how much Cerro Gordo has grown since the beginning. I can't wait to visit someday

What an amazing turn out for the first race, and with such a short notice. Congratulations to each and every one that participated in it. And to those that helped sponsor it.
Today's video will generate so much motivation for next year's event. Not sure if you'll have a "limit" on how many entrants for next year or not, but I'm going to say you'll have AT least 500 of more runners next year.

Congrats Brent! You did it with ease. And congratulations to all who participated in the run. That was no easy feat. Cerro Gordo’s future events could be endless - Astronomy Buffs; Rock and Mineral Hounds; Bird and Wildlife Enthusiasts; Rock Climbers; and even Snowboarders in the winter. lol. Cerro Gordo may not be a hostel but it will definitely bring a community of people together with shared ideas. God bless you Brent!

Cerro Gordo WILL be a booming town again. You can see the live returning in this video. It is a great sight to see.❤

What he said about the camera smoothing out the terrain is really true. I watched the channel for a year before I visited and it was crazy how steep everything actually was. Even the town. And you immediately feel the elevation gain
