• Chaplin is attacked by monkeys in one of the film's most famous scenes. The Circus won Charles Chaplin his first Academy Award - it was still not yet called the ‘Oscar’ - he was given it at the first presentations ceremony, in 1929. As brilliant as this scene is Chaplin was not happy with it and didn’t want to watch the film at all for many years.
The reason is that he had worked very long to perfect the scene and the best takes were badly scratched in the film lab. Chaplin was forced to reshoot and these resulting scenes never quite matched the previous damaged scenes.
